Been in the woods of the Rockies for 60 years. Never had an issue with a bear, never carried spray. I have at times carried a gun, but only when hunting.

you know the old joke about how to tell Grizzly scatt from black bear scatt... black bear is full of berry seeds and smells sweet. Grizzly has little brass bells in it and has the distinct smell of hot peppers.

Streams and gels are much less likely to get blown back in your face when deployed. But I'm not even sure if they offer bear spray in anything but fogger type.
Some Self Defense OC spray is stronger anyway. Bear Spray is regulated by the EPA as an insecticide so is limited to 2 percent or less. Self Defense spray isn't regulated that way and something like Fox Labs OC spray is 4 percent.
