UCO Candlelier conversion

Has anyone else done the UCO Candlelier conversion to oil lamps? I tested mine out last weekend and had some issues with soot and flame coming from vent holes. I have no experience with oil lamps, but thought I had it figured out.

It’s possible the yarn I used for wicking is no good, or wick ends aren’t cut right, or the wicks are too long. But I feel like they’re cut pretty short already, and not sure if those other things would cause the problem.

Anybody have ideas?

Did you treat the wicks with anything? I've heard of people treating with Salt and/or Borax.
Never tried it myself, just something I've heard.

I didn't treat them at all. May have to look into that.
