My goal is to be the last human on planet earth to be on FaceBook.
Going to race you to that goal, just don't want to have to deal with all the FB B.S.
I hate to be negative but you are probably right. They probably just call it "targeted advertising". In today's world where most tech startups fail, I think that most social media companies are guilty of some form of consumer manipulation as they seek to not only survive but expand and become dominant in their respective markets. Just like any corporation, they want you to think positively of their brand and trust their services and products. Their goal is to have you eventually conduct all of your activities like paying bills, watching TV, emailing friends, shopping, order groceries, etc. through their online platforms. I am just reminded of the old saying that there is no such thing as a free lunch.
Getting back to the topic of why the OB movement is exploding, some of the reasons may have to be positively attributed to the great online social media tools that Facebook and Google have created to bring the world together. I am sure that the development costs were quite high. The live streaming of video in High Definition and mass-uploading of high quality photos from any LTE-enabled device can allow many who are not participating in events to easily follow along very closely in real time from anywhere in the world. A decade or so ago in the early days of the internet, you would have had to wait for an online article to be written afterward to find out what had happened and to perhaps just see a low resolution photo or two of the adventure. A decade or so before that, you would have had to wait for the printed article to appear in your monthly subscription to some paper-based magazine. The world is changing and I may just have to roll with the times...
In my opinion, the growing OB community is worth it. So far, Michael, Corrie and and the rest of the OB leadership have made excellent decisions in every aspect of the development of the OB forums, website, etc. I trust their judgment implicitly and assume that Facebook is the ideal platform to host the OB regions. The cost to OB to develop another facet of the forum or website to facilitate this type of high-level, localized interactions amongst members is probably too cost prohibitive. The Facebook option is already developed, ready to go and can deal with the expected volume and needs of new members.

There is no doubt this site is expanding at a great rate of knots. This is the only overland site that I follow now. Must join as a full member I will do that in a minute. It is one of the friendliness and most helpful sites regarding overland travel. There is no snobbery about rigs or equipment everyone is treated on the same level. But do you think its own success will bring n the wrong type to the site?.
While I agree FB has done and more than likely still does poor social practices. My major concern with FB is privacy. If your settings aren't just so you are very vulnerable. In addition to all that you have gotta make sure you keep up with their sneaky setting changes in order to maintain your privacy settings!
Now on the other hand....
It is so super easy to keep up to date with people, share videos and pictures it's no wonder that many places use it as a tool for that.
Personally I won't post much on FB but I don't mind having the account for situations like this

Try to look at it from the admins position. The OB forum and sites don't have that kind of capability and the simple fact that FB can helps. Plus it is a major means to help spread the word and promote OB to new members. The gain in this case outweighs the risk, making it worthwhile

It has not happened yet despite having grown so much in the last year or so. There is no shortage of forums and groups out there to join. People will generally gravitate to those forums and communities where they feel welcome and which reflect their values and opinions. As you say, there are other overland sites out there but I too only truly feel welcome and comfortable on Overland Bound. I acknowledge that I have not tried them all yet though so my opinions are based on the limitation of my personal experiences. There is no judging here, which is nice. It has a homely feel to it. Perhaps, it's the simple and clear message combined with the founding principles. If anything, I want to be more involved and feel truly excited for the future.
I'll say that there isn't a wrong type. What makes overland bound different is we welcome everyone. If your sole purpose is to be a troll and crap on everything you won't be around long. I'm not a moderator but I'm sure there has to have been some weeding out.
I've read on a few posts on other group pages not digging OB and essentially running off at the mouth. I asked why but never get a response.

Regarding the Facebook Groups and missing out if you do not have a Facebook account: Every official event, meet, trip, etc. that the folks on the Facebook Groups organize will also have a post here on the forum in the Regional forums, and appear on the Member Calendar. Of course any "Hey, I'm going to the TooRocky Trail today, anyone wanna come along" that gets posted on Facebook will not show up here.
I am and have been opposed to sharing info with Facebook, Google, et al. I have several anonymous accounts on Facebook, Gmail, Twitter, etc. that I only use for very specific activities. None in any way tie back to my real name or location, and I do not have Friends, Follows, or Likes on them. I don't have a *real* Facebook account that I share with friends and family. Everyone in my extended family gets irked with me when they ask if I saw their photo or post, but I don't care. I don't need or want to know what they are eating, watching, listening too, etc. ...

What happens if OB gets to big? What happens to those spots you like to go to because others can't get there with a normal vehicle? Food for thought.

What you mean with the last question? Afaik it doesn't matter what you drive as long as it is capable of getting you where you want to go.. so if you drive a "normal" vehicle you can't go to those special places.. then it aint capable..What happens if OB gets to big? What happens to those spots you like to go to because others can't get there with a normal vehicle? Food for thought.

So personally I hope that if a pic from a rally, a large meetup or a well known easy to get to scenic place. All of those are easy enough to avoid.

I can certainly appreciate your concern
I mean, now that more people are opting for Offroad capable vehicles and you have a growing community like OB, what will become of those spots people normally couldn't reach in a 2wd now that they all have 4x4?

That pic is Oneonta Gorge, just outside Portland near Multnomah Falls. The area is beautiful, but yeah, it's really easy to get to from Portland and is always super crowded. Even the more remote spots will likely become more well traveled, but there's still a lot of solitude to be found...
Remember, Just cause they have the capabilities does t mean they'll use em.
How many people with a corvette do you think use them to their potential?
How many WRXs or Lancers or other rally cars actually see dirt?
Id be willing bet there are more JKs that have never seen the dirt than the ones that have.
I feel like more people are happy just being able to say they can and less interested in the actual action of doing.

Yeah I'm sure many don't see off-road. I'm hoping when they all go back to Prius's or other economical cars I can get a good deal on a used overland rig! Lol

I'm a newbie here and I joined this group after lurking for a while because I was impressed with how well the forum is ran and how welcoming this community is. A lot less bickering and fighting than any other forum I have seen.
