A couple hundred years or so ago Thomas Jefferson handed $2,500 to a couple of army guys and told them to go have fun overlanding. They rounded up some more overlanders and made a two year, 8,000 mile expedition out of it. And when they came back they shared their route. And this is what has happened as a result:
(Note those two tracks to the right of the power line.)
(Note tracks to right of power poles, and pavement)
(Note power poles off to right. This is the same pavement as viewed from the hill above.)
After those army dudes Instagrammed their route everybody jumped on the wagon and had to go check it all out for themselves. Hence the 200 year old scars on the landscape. So much for "leave no trace." And now the place has been paved. Anybody with a 2wd drive sedan can get out there now. And cities have been built like Portland, Oregon and Denver, Colorado. As well as highways like I-84 running between them. And just ask Chief Joseph what he thought of all the crowds that suddenly showed up in his neighborhood.
See?
This is what happens when you post your routes.
