Lol. It’s like hey. Spend a ton of money on a RTT, then buy an expensive heavy hitch mounted item that lets the RTT function ALMOST like a tent mounted on the ground.

if only they made ground-mounted tents specifically for this use.....

First, the cost for what you get. Second, finding a piece of flat ground to support the legs evenly ( I assume each leg telescopes independently, but still question the stability). Third, it hangs so far off the rear of the vehicle that it will scrape on uneven terrain or coming off a relatively steep driveway.

I like the hitch and pitch in theory at least, seems like a viable solution for certain situations. My RTT can't be permanently mounted on my FJ(daily), and I haven't come up with a good way to move it back and forth between our vehicles yet but this would provide a new option to use the tent more.

Everything has it's issues, just like traditional ground tents as well as RTTs.

I remember when I first started talking about getting a RTT - people would say that it was ridiculous as well as insanely expensive for a tent. I still get these responses.

Toss in the fact that a RTT will scrape on standard garage openings, tree branches and other low hanging items.

It's not the best design but it's not ridiculous.

Just checked the cost for the H-n-P; per the website they "...expect that costs to initial buyers will be approximately the same as a quality roof top tent."

Also took a better look at the ground clearance. Not much difference between it and hitch mounted storage systems.

I thought it ridiculous mainly because if the cost and weight, when it seems a regular ground tent would function just as well.

But yall’s perspective on its usefulness is interesting. Just goes to show how important context is! I wouldn’t buy it, but maybe others would indeed find it useful.

Agreed.

I thought the safety aspect (a ladder at night) brought up by New Atles was rather interesting. SWMBO is very leery of a RTT for this reason. This is why I'm looking at mounting one on a trailer.

@ArkansasDon I know has dealt with similar concerns from his wife. His sharing might be helpful to you.

I’m actually all for RTT mounted on a trailer vs a vehicle. Our RTT is a bit higher than I like, and a trailer is more versatile. I sort of think things like the hitch and pitch are a little more gimmicky though and I’m just super skeptical.

My company recently invested in a hitch mounted lift gate for a lot of our vehicles, and honestly I have been woefully disappointed in the quality of the workmanship and lack of sturdiness of them. My conclusion now is once again, hitch mounted, niche solutions often are gimmicky and involve compromise. Bed mounted lift gates like tommy gate have been around forever and for good reason, just like RTT’s are mostly mounted on roofs or bed/trailer crossbars for a reason.

I have a feeling in Colder Weather that it would provide a lot more insulation than a tent ever would Plus in really heavy rain I would guess it would be 100% dry in there. And possibly having the option to run a tent or some set a cover off the back of it you could rest and relax and eat food all in the same spot. I'm guessing they're markets probably more towards people that want something more than a tent but don't want to pull an RV.

I think your market assessment is probably spot-on. This thing is off the ground away from creepy-crawlies, but doesnt carry the other hassles of a RTT.

I wouldnt buy it (though I wouldnt buy an RTT either), but I can see it having a market.

And, to be fair, I bet you could easily take that thing through 98% of the country's forest service roads or two-track trails to still get to decent destinations.

I've been leaning towards a trailer mounted RTT as well. I like combining the aspects of the extra storage/utility and having more of a Base Camp design where I can set it up and use my rig if needed rather than having to break it down again.

Of course that becomes a more expensive option than this or a RTT alone. But being able to put all the items in a stand-alone trailer so it doesn't have to be installed into a DD makes it an attractive idea (at least to me).
