I have been using Glue Tread repair kits now for tire repair classes for a bout two years, I have found it to be a very useful tool to repair sidewall damage. It eliminates the need to remove the tire and sew the slit, install a Baja patch and re mount the tire. (huge pain in the A___)
Take a look at this article about the process, this is some good info:

How to Repair Sidewall Damage on a Rough Surface
Of course you can patch a flat sidewall surface, but what if the damage is over the lettering or even part of the tire lug? With just a pocket knife and some sand paper, learn how to patch your sidewall on a non flat surface.
