Roof rack tiedowns

I am looking for some sort of tiedowns to hold stuff in my roof rack that isn't one of those with the big ratchet straps that likes to jam up and make me climb on the roof to pry open with a screw driver. Maybe something like a small version of what flat beds use to secure cargo, any ideas

I hate ratchet straps for the exact same scenario you described, and generally they are too much strap for my needs. I recently picked up a "motorcycle strap" which seems to be better suited for me. The strap gets pinched in the teeth of a lever/button and is released by pushing in on said button. Will be giving it a full go this coming week but I think it will do what I need it to.

Have you looked at cam straps? I like those, very easy to use.

I've had those come loose on more than one occasion.

If you take time to start the ratchet strap properly each time, you will have no issues.

I'm a big believer in quality rope and a few good knots.
1) Tie off to the truck roof / rack with a Bowline ( http://www.animatedknots.com/bowline/index.php )
2) Pass loose end over cargo as needed, through tie down on roof/rack, pull tight, tie a 1/2-hitch ( http://www.animatedknots.com/halfhitch/index.php )
3) Repeat step #2 back and forth over cargo to secure.
4) On last pass Pull tight, then tie a trucker's hitch to secure the load ( http://www.animatedknots.com/truckers/index.php )
Alternatively a variation of the cleat knot can also be used to finish the tie down if the ending is near a vertical support on roof rack ( http://www.animatedknots.com/cleatvert/index.php ).

If you really have a hard time with knots Look into getting a few Figure 9's

I also highly recommend LoopAliens ( https://loopalien.com/ ) I picked up a number of these during their kickstarter and have been using the hell out of them ever since. A buddy got the Chinese knockoffs from ebay or Amazon and the ones he got were not properly finished leaving some of the edges sharp enough to cut the cord and come undone.
