Hi everyone!

I've just arrived on the forum as it looks like a great place to find some good advice!

Over the weekend my offer was accepted for a MAN x43 18.263 6x6. This will be my first purchase of an overlander and first vehicle purchased outside of the UK, so I need to be clear on how to go about it.

Here's my outline plan so far. Hopefully the steps I'm planning to take can be verified or added to as the case may be.

1. Budget items - Sept 2018 DONE!
  • Vehicle price.
  • VAT - 99% sure the VAT is not payable. Wishing to be 100% sure! Vehicle is 1999 and has done 120,oookm.
  • Independent inspection.
  • Import.
  • Registration etc in UK.
  • Class C LGV license.
  • Storage costs.
  • Running costs.
  • Maintenance costs.
2. Inspection & deposit - Oct 2018
  • Check all paperwork and define payment/receipt schedule & terms. DONE!
  • Have the vehicle inspected and valued by an independent organisation - diepruefer.de are responding positively. I also contacted TUV and ADAC. ADAC have given me a long list of potential inspectors.
  • Inspection.
  • Test drive.
  • Pay deposit & receive receipt.
3. Obtain Class C LGV license - Nov 2018-Jan 2019
  • Class C LGV license - any recommendations near London?
  • International Driver's Permit.
4. Pay balance - Dec 2018
  • Physical inspection to check the vehicle has not been driven since deposit payment.
  • Pay balance & receive receipt.
  • Sign vehicle paperwork over to me.
  • Seller to activate “Kurzkennzeichen” - allows me to drive it back to the UK on his insurance.
5. Import to UK.
  • Is this absolutely necessary or could I save myself time and money by storing in Germany?
  • Seller may be able to drive vehicle to UK.
  • Best import companies to use and example costs? Quotes have been requested from My Car Import & Auto Shippers.
6. Vehicle registration & paperwork - Dec 2018
  • Modification to UK roads.
  • Registration in UK.*
  • Insurance*
  • Tax.
  • MOT.
  • Class C LGV license.
  • International Driver's Permit.
* I am a UK resident. Is keeping the vehicle registered in Germany an option in order to avoid unnecessary transport and registration to the UK?

Will Brexit cause this to be an option?

...

** Is there a simple and cost-effective way to get international insurance for such a large vehicle?

Can I insure the vehicle appropriately for long stints out of the UK? It is very possible that I will travel for 3-12 months at a time, maybe even longer.

Is number of days outside the county going to be restrictive and should I phrase my requirements to suit?

Do I insure at cost price or valuation price?

I'll be 34 in January. Does this affect my approach to seeking insurance?

Any terminology to avoid saying when requesting quotes? I have read somewhere that I should always say "motor home" rather than "expedition rig", for example.

Any insurance company recommendations?
Many thanks for reading my essay. I hope It sounds like I'm on the right path...!

Ahhh... I wish I could but I'm working today/tomorrow and then attending The Glamping Show on Thursday-Saturday.

Are there any other big events in September/October that I should be aware of?

The two events are only 25 minutes apart from each other. Thanks for the heads up. I will see what I can do!

In the meantime it would be great to hear some more views on my thought process.

...

EDIT: I see the show is on Sat/Sun. I should be able to get there Saturday for a few hours.
