This order is for developed sites. The order is included as a PDF doc.
OLB will continue to monitor to see if this order is expanded to dispersed areas and roadways within the PNW region.
The key point with this order is that it goes through September 30, unlike others in the other forest regions that are shut down till April 30.

  • To provide for the protection of public health and safety and prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Region is implementing a public safety closure for all developed recreation sites within the administrative boundaries of the following National Forests: Rogue River-Siskiyou, Fremont-Winema, Umpqua, Willamette, Olympic, Mt Baker-Snoqualmie, Okanogao- Wenatchee, Colville, Deschutes, Ochoco & Crooked River Grassland, Umatilla, Siuslaw, Wallowa-Whitman and the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area . Forest Order No. 06-00-00-20-01 prohibits public use of developed recreation sites on the specific forests.

I got an email from the Parks And Recreation Director for the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest yesterday. He is advising all of us to hit the trails and disperse camp where we can. Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is encouraging Oregonians to go out and fish. Local Authorities are advising people how to properly social distance themselves without issuing situations or warnings unless a person or persons becomes unruly.

Get out and explore while you still can. Just practice social distancing, tread lightly, and leave no trace.

Meanwhile in Canada

Banff, AB.

Banff emergency services are stopping vehicles at checkstops to discourage visitors from going into the townsite. Businesses are closed, only providing essential services for residents, and vehicle access is closed to national park trailheads. Travel creates too great a risk of coming in contact with, or spreading, COVID-19. Checkstops are providing public health information, such as this message from Dr. Theresa Tam, Chief Medical Officer of Canada:

“During important religious observances such as Easter, we need to not let down our guard. That means dinners and celebrations need to be restricted to your existing household members only. Make arrangements now for virtually connecting with others through phone and on-line methods.”

Stay home, stay safe.
