Ozark camp site suggestion?

  • Guest, we will be conducting site maintenance this week and some downtime is expected. At this time Rally Point and the Member Map will also become an app-only feature for long-term security and stability. A few days after this maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

Hi folks, looking for a nice dispersed camping spot (on water) for our second night. Plan is to camp at Spainhour Falls Friday night, then head to the Oark store for fuel and food Saturday morning. We'll head ENE from there. Any suggestions on a nice creek side camp site a few miles East of Sand Gap? We don't mind a rough trail.
No one in our group has been in the Ozarks.

Go about 8 miles east of Sand Gap on 123. Turn right on 5881. It is immediately before a one lane bridge that crosses Big Piney creek. Go a few miles down and it will cross Hurricane Creek. Right at the crossing, before you cross, there is a good campsite on the right hand side. There is room for a couple rigs and has a fire ring.
Alternately, 5881 Y's about 1/8th mile before the creek. If you go right you will be on a abandoned forest service road that ends about 1/4 mile in. Nice campsite there as well but only room for one rig.

Check the weather. You'll probably need a kayak to get out of there. Calling for heavy rain starting Friday and going all weekend. I was headed that direction starting tomorrow but have diverted to Lincoln National forrest due to weather in Northern NM, OK, and AR.
