Overlanding in Indiana

Hello everyone!

My son and I are wanting to start some short overlanding trips to get our feet wet. We have plans to go off-roading which is limited in Indiana to pretty much OHV parks from what I’ve researched. I’d love to find some trails, but I can’t seem to find any really information.

I am also having a hard time finding overlanding destinations. I know some OHV offer camping like Haspin Acres, but it’s not quite the same. Might be a decent starting point though.

Let me know if any of you have a favorite spot in Indiana! I know Hoosier National Forrest has camping, but not really any campsites as overlanding destinations from what I’ve seen. My son and I are going to start a YouTube channel to have fun and document our adventures as complete novices.

I would suggest getting the OnX App and you will be able to find trails a lot easier that are fairly close to you. let me know if you make it down to Kentucky we have a lot of trails here including the Kentucky Adventure Trail (KAT) and the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway (DBBB). I'm sure I could get a group together to show you all around with myself of course. I hope you and your son find what you're looking for and I admire that your doing this with him!

Thank you! onX was having a sale so I signed up for a 1 year membership for $10. It seems to be worth it for us starting out. I have a few routes I have planned on it already.

I have wanted to drive the DBBB for a couple of years now. I would love to plan a trip next year if I can work the PTO out. How long does it take to complete it? I've also heard good things about the KAT.

Here’s a thought and perhaps a bit of a paradigm shift in American “overland” thinking. I recently mapped out a route around the perimeter of my state, WV thinking it might be an interesting way of exploring the state I have called home for the last 18 years. My intent was to stick to back roads and the state border as much as possible, forest service roads where available. I also spent some time browsing around google earth/ maps for points of interest that could be visited along the way so it wouldn’t become just a tedious backroad drive. Not exactly what most of us, myself included, think of, but adventure is adventure, right? Sadly, most of the camping along the route I made would need to be in state parks or private campgrounds as the national forests are on the eastern side of the state.

That is a really interesting idea. It would definitely be a unique way to see the state!

I'm with you on the mindset of wanting to see my state differently. I've lived in Indiana my entire life pretty much, and haven't thought of it as much more than home. I'm hoping ot find some fun adventures too.
