Old Medium ALICE pack has worked great for me about three years now.

Oooh, I like the used Alice pack idea! I wish I would've thought of that before getting a trasharoo. They can be found occasionally at yard sales for 5-$10 and are basically just a smaller trasharoo but cooler! Since I started using my trasharoo hanging on the tailgate of my truck I realized that I should probably get a sheet of that 3m clear bra material so it doesn't rub through the paint, just an idea for those who don't have a tire to hang it from.

I like the idea of the Trasharoo, but my wife doesn't. She wants a stand-alone trash can away from the trailer. When looking at these, though, I thought a military surplus Sea bag would hang from a spare tire, should be well built and cheap(er), and should hold a trash bag inside nicely. I haven't tried it, however. If someone does, please post pics so I can see if it works like I think. I've seen them online for $16 and up.

That's all I use now is a military duffel. Works great, lots of room and the trash is hidden away. I never smell it either!

I concur on the military duffle. Easily available from places like sportsmansguide. Choice of new or surplus, material, and some are lined so no leak through. A military duffle on the roof rack is my go to.

For those of us who have a spare tire on the rear and were in the military. Use your duffle bag. It works great and I have been using mine for a year now. Shoulder straps over the tire, feed them through the wheel and weave the straps through the buckles. Cool, different, nostalgic and free.

I use an old medium alice on my Side by side (free, leftover stuff) and I'll probably just use an old duffle bag (again, free, leftover gear) for the van.

How about a garbage bag hung on a tree and drop off at the nearest receptacle? Just drain the spit out of your beer cans if you put it inside the truck so you don't have a stinky mess.

Hard to beat the Trasharoo for the cost. My buddy built his own for fun and even he said he spent almost as much on materials as he would have just buying a Trasharoo. That's not even counting his time.
If you go on amazon and type in "car trashcan" there are tons of options. I didn't want to go with the Trasharoo cause I don't have anywhere on the outside to hang one anyway.
So I went with this option from Amazon. Comes with a plastic/vinyl insert to keep gunk from escaping and has hooks on the outside so you can secure a plastic grocery bag into the plastic insert. It's smaller than a trasharoo but I keep it in the Jeep all the time now and it holds enough for my uses. I do keep a few full sized trashbags in the Jeep as well and we pickup trail garbage as we can.
