Lots of good information on this thread. I still use a compass and good paper maps for my travels. Have an old GPS and might start logging information of starting and stopping points in my travel log book though, along with my compass points. To answer your question, find a boyscout group and have them teach you. That is the way I learned as a boyscout. Then you have to learn by getting out and doing. Benz.

I know how to use most maps with a compass thanks to my job but when i go to the woods on my own time not works I just try to read the topography of the map and use terrain association. ie. After the low water crossing and around the next curve to the right there is a trail head. Go left 1.4 miles and look for the hill top and so on and so on. It's more fun for me that way. And if I get a little lost the trip has just transitioned to an adventure ha ha
