I'm just a little south of you, but a couple of my favorite state parks are fairly close and the fees are pretty low.

• Goose Creek State Park near Washington NC. Beautiful very dispersed campsites One of my favorites Goose Creek State Park | NC State Parks
• Merchants Millpond State Park near Gatesville, NC once again very beautiful dispersed and you have a slight chance of seeing the alligators. Merchants Millpond State Park | NC State Parks
• Chippokes Plantation State Park. Very nice, not as dispersed. Chippokes Plantation State Park
• Northwest River Park in Chesapeake. Nice, clean, it's the least dispersed of the others. Northwest River Park and Campground
