The only effective non-lethal that allows you distance and is simple to use is OC (Oleoresin Capsicum), aka, pepper spray. Quick to deploy and simple to use.

Actually several effective measures. So you carry Pepper Spray?
What I now have added is the Umarex. First two rounds are pepper spray, next two are hard plastic, then comes the stuff that really hurts..

If you use pepper spray, be sure to get upwind before you use it. It's not fun to get sprayed with your own.

Or get the pepper gel. It won't blow back like the regular sprays and as a benefit, it sticks to everything it hits.
