My wife and I are planning a trip from NJ to Missoula MT. We are just getting started on planning.

So far we plan to stop in South Dakota and go to Deadwood. We also plan on possibly staying a night or 2 in Glacier park, although their dog policy sucks, so we may pass on that.

I'll up date with our rout and ideas as it progresses.

We have also been gathering our gear to accomplish the trip. Picked up a "damaged/used" CVT Mt Rainier the other day. Plan to get a RCI rack for it to go on the F150.

This is going to be fun!

Oh...what's up with the dog policy? I plan on going there in June and will have a dog with me.

@Scott.Coco A lot of parks do not allow pets because they "disturb the wildlife". Pets have to stay in vehicles and can only be in designated areas such as campgrounds. @Ironhide Fx4 there are a ton of awesome trails and camping spots out here in the Black Hills. What were you looking at doing here other than Deadwood?

Exactly what Daniel Etter said. I can't bring them on the trails. Can't leave them alone. There is a day care but it's a bit out there from the park.

I am really just getting started to plan. I just always wanted to see Deadwood.

If you have any helpful tips I would greatly appreciate it.

So it looks like Ironhide Fx4 and I are looking at stopping at Indiana Dunes National Park, Cottonwood Campground in Yankton, SD and then Custer National Park on our way out to MT. Haven't finalized any of this yet, but that's what the first round of planning has gotten us so far.

We finally have an itinerary for the trip out to Montana set up (only a week to go, so I should hope so!). I'm posting a link to a google map itinerary we have set up. If anyone has suggestions of some good dirt roads to travel, places for dispersed camping, places to see, places to eat etc we would love the suggestions! We plan to do some dispersed camping while out in the SD area, but don't have many good ideas for dispersed camping between NY and there. Also, we are REALLLY looking for great suggestions on some nice dirt roads or even just more scenic roads to hit than the highways. We will have to take highway more than we want just due to time restrictions, but would love to add in some better roads:-)

Our general itinerary is:
Auburn, NY to Warren Dunes State Park, MI
Warren Dunes State Park, MI to Clear Lake State Park, IA
Clear Lakes State Park, IA to Custer State Park, SD with a stop to see Mount Rushmore
Custer State Park, SD to Sundance, WY with stops to see the filming site of Dances with Wolves off Forest Road 222 and spend some time in Deadwood, also plan to drive Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road
Sundance, WY to Florence, MT with stops to see Warren Peak lookout tower and Devil's tower.

Once I have an itinerary for our trip back from Montana I'll post that too!
