Been out of the overland game for a bit but I am looking at getting a new rig but can't decide.

I am looking at going between a jeep grand cherokee (wj) and a 2nd gen mitsubishi montero.

Any pros and cons for both would be appreciated. Currently in southern california but plan to move to Tennessee.

Either can be a capable vehicle for many flavors of overlanding. Being both are older platforms and will likely need a bit of work. Take a good look at aftermarket support (to the level you are aiming for) and replacement parts availability (junkyards and parts stores). WJs are very present in my local Pick & Pull yards with usually 3 or more in each yard at any given time. But in California rust is not an issue so the parts are in great shape. Is there a rust issue in Tennessee?

I am biased as I own a WJ, but they have their own quirks. Take a look at the WJ build threads and you can see mild to wild builds. How capable or reliable are you aiming for?
The WJ has a number of factory packages and your happiness will depend on getting the right factory setup at the start to support your intended build out expectations.

One of the quirks on a WJ is anything over a 265/70-16 (about a 30.5") tire and you need lift and plastic/fender trimming for clearance. Stock based suspension lift and 32's can do well, but body mods WILL be required for clearance. Unsure on the Montero, but if you have your heart set at 33's this may greatly sway your decision.

I have not owned a Mitsubishi but I believe there are quite a few members here happily running them.

ive gotta vote montero here. not gonna hate on a wj but i personally think the montero is a far superior vehicle. the drive train on a 2nd gen is so robust(compared to a wj). tbh ive never owned either. just thinking about this from a technicians mindset

Two great choices. I'd only consider which one has better support ie dealer, maintenance, after market. Which one will let you do what you want, go where you want..... and of course price, parts etc.

Both are great vehicles.
