I'm brand new into this overland stuff, I'm very interested in all of it. I deploy in October to Iraq. My intention is to do some overlanding when I get out of the army next year. I have a family of 3 the wife, dog, and I.

Any tips in general?

The biggest tip I can give you is, don't wait! Get out there now, and enjoy life. Even just overnighters and weekend trips can be enjoyable. Too many of us (myself definitely included) spend all of our time planning what we are going to do, rather than just getting out there and doing it.

Especially since you are deploying soon.. Get that extra quality time with the family, and get used to spending lots of time in the desert at the same time!

I was stationed at Bliss back in 1994 / 1995 and do not miss El Paso at all. But at least you're in Texas! :o

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one that's not gonna miss it. Probably going to head up to cloudcroft,NM soon to do some riding and camping but nothing to big until after the deployment
