So I do love the MaxxTraks but damn they’re ‘spensive. Anyone have any recommendations on a not so pricy alternative for a set of 4. Preferably that’ll be as decent as the MT option…?

The cheapest alternative is used car mats. If you can find the mesh grating used for flooring on external stairways it can be relatively inexpensive.
On the other hand, if you get the best, you'll get the best performance. I have no idea of prices where you are however we chose ARB TredPros.

None of the cheap knock off one will be as decent as MaxTrax (obviously). It depends on your needs and type of off-roading. You can start with cheap ones from Amazon and when they'll brake you can buy ActionTrax/ARB/MaxTrax.

Yeah I guess buy cheap buy twice would be the name of the game on that.

Well, we've used sets of cheap Amazon traction boards a few times without them breaking and they were very effective. I disagree with the previous post - the name brands are heavy on the "overland tax". Get what you can afford - it's better than nothing at all, and nothing replaces using your head and not getting stuck in the first place. Recovery gear is to get you out of bad situations, not get you further into them!

I have to disagree here a little bit and is why i ended up with the ARB TredPros. Esspecially with recovery gear Inwould rather pay the extra "overland tax" for the name brand that has proven itself and wont break on me out in the field. Not to mention if you break a $100 set of boards and buy a new set, you are 2/3 the way to the item that is reputable. or you end up going with the name brand instead of another set of $100 boards and spent $100 to figure you you should have gone with the better item.
I would much rather spend more for peace of mind when i do get stuck knowing that my recovery gear is more likely to get me through it.

I suppose the question is, are you going to use them for bridging? Personally I don't find a need for boards because I won't be using them for bridging. Instead, I went with GoTreads which fit behind the back seat in my Tacoma. They offer some benefits of the MaxxTraks, don't have the features (or the bulk) that I won't use, and I got them on sale so I saved even more by not getting a special color.
I'm not saying Maxxtraks aren't worth the money, but your specific use should dictate that.
