I tossing around ideas for a trip next year. I'll be coming from Indiana and thinking of a final destination of the Grand Tetons... But would like to go via Rocky Mountain National Park. What I'm looking for is someway to get from highway 34(around the switchbacks) to highway 14 just on the western side of the Rockies. Gaia does not show any motor vehicle use roads around there without having to go straight south to Grand Lake and then cutting west.

I've found a road leaving the be Alpine Visitor Center called the Old Fall River Road but that was on Google Earth... Not sure if it's a public road or not.

If I can't get thru at that spot it's no big deal... Just thought some Colorado locals might be able to help out.

Thanks

The roads in RMNP are very limited. Old Fall River Road I believe is one way going down. But it's going to end up in the same place. The park does not provide any alternate vehicle routes in our out other than the main gates on 34 and 36.
Having recently returned from Grand Tetons, I'd suggest a scenic route I'd suggest going south to Granby to 40, go west a mile or two then head north again on 125 toward Rand and Walden. You can take 125 into Wyoming. Of course, staying on 40 and heading west through the state won't let you down.

Going east to west there are two ways over the top in RMNP. The first is Trail Ridge Road, a well paved and traveled, scenic route. Fall River Road is one way, but it is going up not down (East to West) and is a dirt road suitable for passenger cars with reasonable clearance.
