Traveler III
Hello everyone. I'm new to overlanding, but not new to camping/hiking/backpacking. Been getting out there my whole life but usually on foot, never really considered actually using my truck to explore in this way. In the last 2-3 years I've had a lot of changes in my life that led me to where I am today. I want to spend my time outside exploring, and collecting experiences rather than things. So I'm starting with what I've got, and that's a 2013 F150 FX2, his name in Gunner. He's not much but he's all mine. He's loyal, and I try to take good care of him.
Gunner got new hiking boots this week to replace his old sneakers. I've got a tent type awning normally used over the back hatch of suv's that I can put over the bed, and since I have a bit of a hammock problem, I have no need for a RTT. I often use the bed of my truck so I don't want a topper, but I'd like to get a rack for the bed, if I can find one I can put on and take off myself that doesn't break the bank. I'm looking at building my own, but haven't gotten too far yet, thinking unistrut, but that gets heavy quick. Ideally, I'd mount a 270 deg awning, but again it would need to be able to come off.
For now, I have a cool table system from my camping with the family days that works quite well. Hammock w/ stand and rain fly off to the side. I do have a MOLLE system in the back seat that velcro's to the underside of the seat. I keep a hammock and necessary accessories on it, flashlight, shovel, some tools, glow sticks, trauma shears, etc. Here's a cool bonus the Gunner came with: on-board air!! the previous owner installed one of those train horns, its fun and all but the fact that it has a compressor with a 2.5 gallon tank is the cool part. It was installed in place of the spare, so I don't know exactly what the means for crossing through higher water levels. Either way I have air lines routed and installed just inside each rear door.
I am excited to get out and explore. Going to start with the Hill Country Overland Route here near home, but trips are always more fun with friends. So anyone looking for a day trip let me know.
I met a few people at a recent rally point near me and look forward to meeting some more soon.
I'll post a few pics including one of my copilot Toby. It's rare that he isn't with me and I think he loves the adventure more than I do. Which is good motivation.
