Exactly, which is why we spend so much money with Jeff, the Amazon delivery folks know me by name.
So, I ordered some SumoSprings for the F-150 to help with that SpaceKap slide-in when it gets loaded.
A lot of people are in the same situation and have to get creative. Many fund their trips slowly by saving where they can, doing extra work or side jobs, learning to repair and build things themselves, and prioritizing experiences over expensive upgrades. A capable rig doesn’t always have to be the newest or most built out either. Sometimes simple setups, careful planning, and making the most of what’s already available go a long way.
Back in 2023 we sold our VW — 76,000 km on the clock — and put the money into a 2009 Land Cruiser J120 3.0 D-4D with 210,000 km. On paper that sounds weird: trading a young, low-mileage car for one nearly three times the distance. But the VW just wasn't any fun to drive, and honestly I kept worrying its engine would soon blow. The 1KD diesel in the Land Cruiser? At 210,000 km it's barely run in — these engines are built to last, which is exactly many trust them.
We then put roughly the same amount again into the LC itself. The Land Cruiser was still completely original when we got it. From there a lot of it was DIY: underbody repairs, roof rack, light bar, new tyres, plus a portable kitchen and water filtration system we built ourselves.
So in the end, we converted the value into something durable and our own DIY work — bought once and used for years. That way the trip itself only needs to cover fuel, food, and the occasional campground on private land.
