Hi, all. Through the years, I have taken many trips using my truck as a, well, base camp. Whether backpacking, mountain biking, fishing, or just travelling, using my truck to dispersed camp along the way has been the norm. Have I been "overlanding"? I'm getting ready to embark on an adventure this summer and finding myself building my truck bed into an overlanding rig. I drive a Chevy 2500HD 4WD with a fiberglass cap. I have basically everything ready to build and install, bed platform, storage, and a dual battery system with DC to DC charger. Now, all I need is for this stupid arctic blast in Ohio to pass by. I leave solo from Ohio in May bound for Alaska. I'm looking forward to learning from this forum and maybe sharing a few things along the way.

Hello from Florida! Sounds like you have a starting plan. I made the same jump of building out the back of my F350. There are definitely some lessons learned of what works and what doesn’t. Find a way to incorporate a small KW diesel heater and a bidirectional fan system. Building was fun, learning was eventful and wire size means everything. If you use your dc-dc charger to the alternator, use a good fuse to protect. I also used a disconnect so my alternator wasn’t always working.
Kind of jealous about the Alaska trip.
Don’t forget to create a build page so we can follow your progress.

Hi there! Great to have you around these parts. I highly recommend spending some time in the general section and the Overland Trips Now & Then forum. And ditto to what @highboy4x4 said. You can always make a 'home' for yourself with a build thread.

Cheers!

Greetings from a former Buckeye! We are headed up Alaska way via Canadian Rockies crossing into Canada late May/Early June . It'd be cool to run into you up there.

Canadian Rockies will be my route on the way home. I would love to see Banff and Jasper but will do that late August. Late May/early June is when I'll be heading up as well. I'm hoping the Alaskan Marine Highway from Bellingham, WA to Whittier, AK will be open by then to ferry up inner passage. Keep your eye out for a dark red Chevy 2500HD with Ohio plates.
