Hello all,

I'm Villa. My family and I live in San Jose. (disclaimer) I'm a complete NEWBIE at over landing. Drive a '15 Tacoma sr5 4x4 stock (Mods still to come) and look forward to talking shop w/ everybody. Sorry no pics yet.

You can run some of the easier trails at Hollister in stock form but skid plates and rock sliders should be your first modifications. Stock skid plates are not very stout, so consider aftermarket steel or aluminum skids for more protection.

Also, be prepared for some 'pinstripes' to be applied to your paint as a lot of the trails are narrow and lined with brush.

Most definitely yes

My Colorado was stock when I took it. There's stuff for everything out there, plus it's a really good way to figure out or get a good idea of what you and your rig are capable of before going on an adventure.

Yes you can get all that stuff but where does it end? Start wheelin and if you decide you want to start doing some of the gnarly stuff then start shopping for that stuff. Obviously you'll want to buy it before you start doing it but you might find that running trails is fun.

That is always debated. As Mac said, there are a lot of trails you can do in stock form.... my point is that if you get into something tougher with large rocks, stumps or logs, the possibility of body or under carriage damage goes up. I often travel to VERY remote locations in the High Sierra's or the desert and am unwilling to risk being stranded or being forced to leave my rig behind due to a mechanical problem. I prefer to err on the side of safety....

If you plan on doing a suspension lift, it can be tricky picking the right springs to support the added weight of skids, sliders and bumpers. I'd suggest that you read up on the other Tacoma owners build threads to get some idea's for suspension upgrades. It really depends on what kind of terrain you want to explore.

The mod bug can bite hard and infect your wallet quickly, so starting with a few easy trails and seeing how you like it is a good idea.

I'm going to go to Frank Raines this Sunday unless it ends up raining. It's about the same distance as Hollister. I'll probably know for sure saturday.

Needed? No. Recommended? Absolutely. Which is what BCB did ;-)

Hollister will eat your undercarriage and rocker panels the minute you let your guard down. All it takes is one under or overcorrection and now you've slipped off that rock you were crawling over and your rocker panel slams into the boulder under it. Or there's no way out of the hole you just fell in without dragging your t-case over a boulder.

Hollister is in a constant state of flux (it *is* directly on top of the San Andreas faultline) and the 4wd trails aren't nearly as heavily maintained as the motocross tracks. You never know what you'll run into (pun intended!)
