Did you go? We are planning a trip coming from the west also and was wondering how far you got that first day.
Last time I went West to East we made it past Cherry Log. We camped on the east side of 515. We would have settled to stay on the west side of 515, but almost all of the sites were taken in the Loop.

Most of the west side is pavement and smooth driving.

I highly suggest running it East to West, IMO its more enjoyable because you tackle all of the "difficult" obstacles at the start of the trip and then you are just a short drive home at the end of the trip, or if you need to cut it short you get to enjoy more of the trip on the east side.

I recommend just running the east part or just running the loop.

The middle and the Eastern side are what consume the most time with all of the side stops there are.
