Keep it simple, basics. Good tires, basic camping gear, first aid kit, and basic recovery gear. Get out there and into adventures. Find out what you need for the style of overlanding you want to do. Don't spend money needlessly. Good luck and safe travels.

Youre good to go. There are soooo many good places to go that don't require high clearance or 4x4. Just listen to your gut...if a trail or road seems sketchy to you, just don't drive it. Walk it or go elsewhere. I've always had lifted 4x4's thinking that every nasty trail MUST lead to something good. Sometimes that is the case, but most times I just beat the hell out of truck for nothing. Most really scenic places will have decent access. There are exceptions, but not enough to justify a modified 4x4 unless you just want one.
Last year I went over Wolf Creek Pass and theres a jeep trail on top that goes up to the very top of the continential divide. I saw several lifted jeeps going so I went in my Tundra and was feeling pretty good about myself when I got up to the top...only to find several small cars that had already made it up there. Fairly low clearance cars made it just fine, so that Ranger is probably going to surprise you as your comfort level with it increases.
