Hello everyone! I am new here, I recently finished a six month journey to South America. As my trip came to an end in June, I am now on a mission to sell my trusty Swiss-registered Subaru Forester 4x4 camper is still available in Lima, Peru, (can also connect in Chile) and I’ve set the asking price to $7,500 USD (I was asking $9,500) to get it into the hands of someone who will actually enjoy it.
To be totally transparent: paying monthly storage fees while the car sits waiting in Lima is getting pricey, and honestly, it’s just extra stress I’d love to take off my plate. As of June, I wrapped up my trip and now back in the states. I’m really hoping to pass it along soon to another traveler starting their South American journey.
A Friendly Note on the Swiss License Plates & Legal Documents
I know a few people have asked questions about the Swiss registration. When I first looked into buying a foreign-plated vehicle down here, I had the exact same hesitations. But after doing my own research and actually living it on the road, my personal experience proved it was far more manageable—and way less expensive—than buying a locally registered car. I was able to drive to Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Argentina and also Bolivia. The process was not at all complex. I felt that it did help cut the cost of constant border paying for a non Swiss car. Ultimately, my Swiss licence plate really benefited me. I had purchased this car from a Swiss couple who actually brought the car to Lima, that is how I came into purchasing the car once they finished their journey.
With local cars, you're often stuck dealing with local tax IDs (RUT/RUC), residency loopholes, and border fees. Driving a Swiss-registered vehicle saved me from all of that. Border crossings were simple: customs just issues a free Temporary Import Permit (TIP) under your passport, and you’re on your way.
Paperwork & Handover Process:
All official registration papers and current Power of Attorney (Poder) documents are already on hand with Aníbal in Lima.
Upon sale, a formal Sales Contract will be signed and a brand-new Power of Attorney (Poder) under the new owner's name will be fully notarized.
That said, please do your own research! I completely encourage prospective buyers to look into how passport-to-passport notarized transfers work on overlander forums. You should feel 100% comfortable with the process before buying.
