Fly Fishing

Thanks for the recommendation @OregonTrail4runner. I enjoy flats fishing, the sight fishing is challenging and the water is typically really beautiful. If Mako fishing is like the other deep water fly fishing (either using teasers and/or live bait) I end up feeling like it is chumming. Just not my thing.

Definitely not technical, but very visual. Trying to get a predator to eat a bit of feathers, fluff and foam when he would really rather nibble on you is kind of like fishing for your cat. It does take on an air of seriousness when you hook the cat and he is bigger than you, crazy fast, jumps (a lot), has a bunch of teeth and is pissed. Not for everyone for sure, but a welcome distraction every year or two. If it will take a fly, I'm in. I'll be heading back to Punta Allen in May for Permit, Tarpon, Bonefish and whatever else swims by...

Flyfishing somewhere in the great northwet almost always kicks off my overland destination planning. I am blessed to live within an hour's journey from the world famous North Umpqua and live 5 minutes from the Mckenzie and middle fork Willamette so my options are many. As you can gather by my profile pic, " the little man in the boat" (hehe) is me, and I drag that driftboat with me all over the place in search of steelhead, rainbow, brookies, and browns. I have been focusing on spey and switch rod casting for winter steelhead for the past couple of months. I have a plan to hit the owyhee river gorge early this summer in the excursion. Anywhere there are fish looking up, I am usually looking for an opportunity to travel there. Look forward to seeing anyone of you out there on the trail.

Thinking about the Owyhee in March for the Skawala hatch if I can break away. If nothing else the Camp Water on the NU fishes good for winter fish in March and breakfast at Steamboat Inn is always a treat... I'm sure we'll run into each other somewhere. Do you ever go to the FFF Expo in Albany?

I'm new to Overlanding but not fly fishing. Half the reason I have developed an interest in overlanding is to get to the water. This summer we are planning a trip from Colorado to California culminating at San Diego.

Last year I started using www.wildtroutstreams.com by Gogal Publishing. There's also an app I purchased which helps locate wild trout. Have not used it a ton but when I have it has proven pretty reliable.

As I begin the trip planning I find myself wishing there were a central program to overlay travel maps as well as fishing data.


As a side note to the folks considering Tenkara, I picked one up a couple of summers ago for my then five year old to use. Having no reel to worry about or line to tangle on his feet he was able to really quickly pick up the casting and caught his first wild trout on the rod. I also fish it occasionally including this past fall on a trip to Japan!

Does Pyramid Lake happen to be one of your stops?

Good to see some locals around, me and the wife always are up in Reno are, we have fished the little truckee, no luck it wasn't a good time to fish. Have never fly fished a lake though? I would be interested on knowing what is different from fishing a river. I'm also a newbie have only fly fished for about a year and trying to learn by myself with my wife

Nice, I am definitely glad to see some more people who are into fly fishing. Lakes are a completely different animal from rivers, especially Pyramid but if you ever have any questions or would like to do some fishing, let me know.

It is definitely worth considering a detour. These fish are monsters! We are expecting to see a 30 pounder this year. I'm still trying to break 15 pounds but even the 5-10 pounders are awesome!

@Justi_0237 - my experience with lakes vary greatly. Depends a lot on if you are fishing the shoreline or from a boat (belly or otherwise) but is definitely different than rivers in that currents don't exist in the same way but the fish still eat. All fish eat. Just have to figure out what, when and where.

i have just recently gotten into fishing, now i cant stop going. Dont have many friends who fish so its often wading up tiny creeks solo. But its a good excuse to get out. But dont judge me, i fish for trout on a spinner.

I'm still trying to get my first 10 pounder at Pyramid. I've had some great days out there though.

I'll, be surf fishing this weekend for perch in Bodega. I love fly in. The surf. Oh yeah, I'll be dropping pots for crabs from my kayak as well. 4 days on the beach with 100+ of my kayaking buddies.

I love my float tubes more though. I use the kayak for floating the American and Yuba, fishing the delta, and fishing the ocean mainly.

But I'll take my float tube over my kayak any day. Kicking around 5 or 6 miles in a day is average for me and my buddy.

I have an Ocean Kayak 13. There are some really nice kayaks out now. I want on with the peddle system like a bicycle. I don't care for the Hobies kick system.

Thanks! No, not a guide but I have definitely put my time in out there. I know a great guide that has that lake down to a science, if you or anyone else is looking. If you are just looking for someone to fish with, I am only 25 mins from the lake.
