OK, I'm officially envious, (LOL). We are in the early planning stages of an expedition like yours up through the Canadian Rockies, then through the Yukon, across the Denali highway, then north to the Arctic Circle. If it all comes together it'll happen in 2019. What would be your very best advice for a guy like me, ( very experienced in the lower 48 backcountry ) but a novice to all things in the great northern wilderness. Obviously fuel range being of primary concern... For us it would be quite a trip as we would have to cross the continent. Thanks,

Following this thread as I am planning a trip up in 2018.

Quickly my two main concerns would be fuel range for sure and if you are heading up in the summer anywhere further north than Whitehorse-ish a two spare tire minimum. shale roads heading way up north will eat a 10ply for lunch after that have a good amount of flex time in your schedule for unexpected exploring and potential break downs any uncommon part you don't carry will take 3-5 days to get to you and the further north you travel more and more common parts will become uncommon

hey mate...my best advice would to have enough extra fuel for the extended routes that have limited fuel stations, i use an AEV fuel caddy and they can carry up to 10 gallons, but add a few rotopax for added assurance. emergency supplies as you should, medical and added emergency blankets and non perishable food and of course water. if your worried about break downs...just make sure your vehicle is in top running order before you head north. i always carry an extra couple of jugs of oil and diff fluid as mine has a lot of km/miles on it now.

Yup, we carry all that and maybe a little more. We also carry a PLB just in case. We have roughly about a 425 mile range with our additional 10 ga on the trailer. I've a couple of oil leaks to buton up, then I think we're ready to go, but?

I have heard horror stories about flies and other insects they may or may not carry small dogs off, or may or may not, carry off all your food.. or may or may not, carry off a small person..

If you're passing through Alberta/BC, I highly recommend backroad mapbooks. They're region specific, e.g Northern Alberta, Kootenay Rockies etc... but have 1:250 000 scaling, and are pretty comprehensive, with plenty of logging/oil roads marked, as well as some general driving distances. Hope you have a great time!

I'm back. As our 450 has over 280,ooo miles on it the trip is being postponed until we swap in a new engine, refresh the transmission, tear down, inspect and rebuild where necessary the entire driveline. It may still happen in 2019. but no later than 2020. As the rig is now, I've no fear of driving anywhere in the lower 48 as there are Landcruiser specialty shops within flatbed range almost anywhere. However, way up north? Not so much and I don't want to have to walk away from it. So our rebuild begins..

There is a very easy solution to having a very sick jeep. One word-- Toyota. :) I got rid of mine before it became sick.
