Does Anybody Fish?

My off roading and exploring generally go hand in hand with trying to find a remote campsite near a stream or lake where a fly can be cast in hopes of catching and releasing beautiful trout.
I'm in Socal, near San Diego. Travels include a lot of the Eastern Sierras, Idaho, Montana and western Utah.
A new stage of my life is unfolding as I'm nearing full retirement. In 2020, I'm working less and I plan to take extended trips to above mentioned locals this year. I drive a stock 2008 Toyota 4WD 4Runner with zero modifications. Haven't found these necessary yet even after trekking 32 miles into the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area in Idaho (man, I love the name of this park). I am not a rock crawler but from a limited perspective I go up, down and over gnarly stuff.
Glad to be in the group and proudly display my 21171 OB emblem. Looking forward to pick'n your brains and reading past forum threads about dual batteries, lift kits and best of all my 2021 goal of driving the Alaskan Hwy. Already saw posts for it and this only reinforces my need to go!
Wishing everybody a fun and adventurous 2020.

Welcome Jan, fishing and hunting is what got me into Overlanding as a child, along with the live for the outdoors.
get out there and explore. Since you like to fish and explore, I highly recommend getting up here to Oregon to fish some of our rivers and lakes. Detroit lake is a great destination along with the Deschutes River near bend

Also the Owyhee River in Eastern Oregon. Great camping, beautiful scenery, great fly fishing for nice browns.

I just about always have a fishing rod in my Jeep. I never know where exactly camp will be but its always on a lake somewhere and most of the time a never catch a thing, but its nice to just sit there in the quiet on a shoreline somewhere.

I haven't fished much of Oregon with the exception of the Owyhee River. The browns in the river snapped my line a couple of times so yes, there are BIG browns in there. The water was nice and cold too on a summer day coming from the bottom of the dam.
I'm looking forward to touching base with you Oregonians in the coming year. I have a ol' high school buddy who lives in Corvallis. Thanks for the info and warm reception.

One of the main reasons I got the van was to camp & fish where most folks won't/can't go. I do a little bit of everything as far as fishing goes; fresh water, salt water, conventional, fly, and most recently Tenkara. I retired a little over 2 years ago and thought I'd be fishing all the time, but somehow that hasn't quite worked out :disrelieved:

I've got a whole bunch of bucket list trips I want to do, but most recently I've been researching a trip up to the John Day river in Oregon to fly fish for smallmouth bass. When my wife retires next year, we want to do a camping/fishing trip to Cabo and do the Alaskan Hwy.

The Jonday River has some amazing bass fishing as well... I don’t fly fish however, kinda know how to, but not very good at the whole casting thing...

Mostly salt water but I try and fish anywhere we go. I have this thing where I can add fishing spots to my list. Plus, it's fun for the kids.
