I stayed at Silver Creek Campground. It was free but first come first serve. Has a vault toilet thats well maintained and picnic tables. Some of the spots have incredible views!
We were there last year. After the visitors center and driving the main road we headed south into the wilderness area along desert roads. Found a legit campsite in the back country (fire pit and picnic table) surrounded by old lava flows on 3 sides. If I can find the location again on a map I'll post it. All I have right now are my handwritten directions from when we went as we heard GPS would be unreliable around the lava. The site was awesome, we were tucked away from wind and the night sky was amazing. Most stars we've ever seen. Driving out the next day we dodged cows and picked up about 200lbs of weight in mud. Awesome time. Still finding mud from that trip.
