Hello all!
You've probably seen a few posts from us in the Overland Trips Reports from the Southwest USA, but we've now returned to the Northeast for the summer (We're originally from Western New York). We weren't sure what to expect from NY as far as off-roading goes, but on our first trip, we were pleasantly surprised!
If you're looking for one of the more technical trails in Central New York, Morgan Hill Powerline Trail is definitely worth checking out. It's only about 2 miles long, but don't let the distance fool you. This trail packs a lot into a short drive and keeps you busy from start to finish.
It's rated a 5/10 in the onX app, and that's consistent with what we found when we ran it in dry conditions. It took us about 2 hours to complete. Expect steep climbs and descents, muddy valleys, puddles, off camber ruts, and a few tight wooded sections where careful tire placement is important. The trail reaches nearly 1,930 feet in elevation and feels almost like an off road roller coaster as it repeatedly drops into valleys before climbing back onto the ridges. Depending on recent rainfall, the water crossings and mud can become significantly more challenging.
There are also dispersed campsites throughout Morgan Hill State Forest, making it an easy trail to turn into a weekend trip. One navigation tip: when you reach the Y intersection, stay right to remain on the Powerline Trail. You don't want to find out what happens if you go to the left
We recently filmed a complete trail review showing every obstacle, current conditions, and what to expect if you're planning to run it.

Let us know if you have any questions! Are there any other Northeastern Overlanders out there?
