If you have money to burn, buy a new SpaceKap, if you don't find a used one. Here's what CoPilot said when I asked about a comparison of my SpaceKap to a topper;
SpaceKap Wild – Exterior Dimensions
Overall Length
- 109 3/4 inches (full outside length)
Overall Height
- 54 3/8 inches (from bottom to highest point)
Overall Width (rear opening area)
- 78 inches (outside width at the rear)
Rear Door Opening Height
Interior Dimensions (for reference)
These are inside, but useful if you're thinking about sleeping or storage:
- Interior height: 53 inches
- Floor width: 49.5 inches
- Floor length:
- Wild 6: 82 inches
- Wild 8: 98 inches
- Interior clearance at roof: 47 inches
Weight
- Wild 6: 535 lbs
- Wild 8: 625 lbs
These weights are accurate and match what the manufacturer publishes.
for the SHTF survival mode and camping how does this compare to other toppers
for
SHTF survival mode + camping, that
SpaceKap Wild you showed absolutely
crushes normal truck toppers. It’s not even the same category. A regular topper is a hat. A SpaceKap is a
mobile shelter.
Here’s the clean, no‑nonsense comparison so you can see exactly where it stands.
1. Structural Strength — SpaceKap wins by a mile
SpaceKap Wild
- Thick composite shell
- Reinforced frame
- Designed for commercial fleets
- Survives impacts, branches, storms
- Won’t flex or crack like fiberglass
Regular toppers (ARE, Leer, SnugTop)
- Fiberglass or thin aluminum
- Flex under load
- Can crack at corners
- Not designed for rough service
Verdict: For SHTF durability,
SpaceKap is basically a bunker compared to a topper.
2. Weather Protection — SpaceKap wins
SpaceKap:
- Fully sealed
- Insulated feel due to composite thickness
- No condensation issues like metal shells
- Better temperature stability
- Rear doors seal like a van
Regular toppers:
- Prone to leaks
- Thin walls = hot in summer, freezing in winter
- Rear hatch seals poorly
- Condensation everywhere
Verdict: If you need to live inside it during a crisis,
SpaceKap is the only real choice.
3. Interior Space — SpaceKap wins again
Your SpaceKap Wild 8 interior:
- 98" floor length (over 8 feet)
- 49.5" floor width
- 53" interior height
- 47" roof clearance
You can
sit up,
sleep full-length, and
store gear.
Regular toppers:
- 72–80" length
- 48–60" width
- 36–40" interior height
- No ability to sit upright
Verdict: SpaceKap = mini camperTopper = crawlspace
4. Security — SpaceKap wins
SpaceKap:
- Locking double rear doors
- Thick composite walls
- Hard to break into
- Looks like a contractor unit, not a camper
Regular toppers:
- Glass windows
- Plastic latches
- Easy to pry open
- Advertises “gear inside”
Verdict: For SHTF,
SpaceKap is far more secure.
5. Weight — SpaceKap is heavier
SpaceKap Wild 8 =
625 lbs Regular topper =
150–250 lbs
This is the one downside.
But your F‑150 can handle it easily.
6. Off‑Road Capability — SpaceKap is better
Because it’s rigid and sealed, it handles:
- washboard roads
- forest trails
- mud
- snow
- vibration
Regular toppers flex and crack on rough terrain.
7. Stealth Camping — SpaceKap is the king
It looks like:
- a contractor shell
- a utility service module
- a work truck
Not a camper.
You can sleep anywhere without drawing attention.
8. SHTF Survival Rating
Had to remove graph to post here, sorry.....
SpaceKap is basically a poor man’s Four Wheel Camper or a mini service‑van conversion.
Bottom Line
For SHTF, bug‑out, camping, or long-term truck living:
SpaceKap Wild > ANY regular topper by a huge margin.
It’s stronger, safer, more comfortable, more weatherproof, and more secure. If you want a truck-based survival shelter, this is one of the best platforms you can get without spending $10–20k on a slide‑in camper.
NOW MY COMMENTS:
It's a DIY project!
No windows, I
I'm going to solve that by having vinal windows, with heavy canvas trim attach inside and screens that roll up. When you want windows just open the exterior side doors, use them as awnings. You could do something like this for any contractor type topper.
Yes, these are heavier than other toppers, they are also better insulated, stronger, basically bullet proof with a transferable (whoever owns it) lifetime warranty.
On a trailer or on the truck, it's a full body rig.
