Battle Born Battery troubles

Now I've been in this thread promoting NOT battle born but my retired parents have battle born batteries in their diesel pusher and they've held up just fine for them. lol They've had those batteries for many years already.

I just always assumed you were paying a big premium for the customer service aspect which might be important for certain buyers.

In 2013, Feb, I bought a Sears Platinum AGM 31M battery, $250. Last year it started acting up and seemed like a loose ign wire. Finally figured it's the battery. Years ago I replaced my old battery charger with a "smart" NOCO genius 5 charger. I decided to leave it on overnight as it has a maintenance mode. Multimeter was reading 12.92v in evening and 14.92v this morning and the charger is still in maintenance mode.
New batteries of similar size, 1150 CCA, are running $450 +. So I'm going to leave the charger on longer to see if it "repairs" the battery. Still 13 years is pretty good for a daily driver!

that's an insanely long time for a battery to last...
NASA launched the Voyager probe back in 1977 and they say they are still getting data from it, so THAT battery and solar set up has lasted 48 years so far in the -455 degrees of space. THATS the battery we all need....

it is odd how most car batteries I buy say they are good for 36 months and sure as hell, month 37 or 38 rolls around and the battery will no longer crank. just like how there are 2 versions of hot water heaters...6 year and 9 year. I bought 2 of the 6 year hot water heaters and both of them crapped out within a month or so of that projected date.
don't know about battle Born...they seem to have other issues, but it seems like pretty much all batteries are designed to only last a limited amount of time. not sure how Sears made a battery last 12 yrs...maybe that is why they are defunct now

I figured the premium cost had a lot to do with assembly in the USA. Thats somewhat important to me, supporting American manufacturing. Needless to say I am disappointed in Battleborn for putting out a subpar product.
I will not dispose of my battery unless I see signs of degradation but I’ve already purchased a Wattcycle battery to step in should it be needed.
Did I mention how disappointing it is to have to do that?

That’s because the Sears DH Platinums of that era were Sears branded Northstar AGMs. I had a 2011 that went for 8 years and only crapped out cause I didn’t know at that time how to charge them, and my crappy Yellow Top in a dual system with it damaged it.

I’ve had 5 Northstars including the Sears DHP in 3 rigs. Batteries + sells the Northstars badged as their X2 Power batteries (I’ve had this confirmed by Enersys who makes them). Northstar is a sister company of Odyssey also owned by Enersys, and a better battery than the one Odyssey I’ve had. Never had a Northstar fail, and the shortest life I’ve had was 6 years in my wife short trip daily driver.

If they get an occasional high voltage (14.7) high amp (25+) charge, they can last a very long time. The problem largely is that most alternators don’t charge them sufficiently.

Good to hear, I went to Batteries Plus and bought an X2 to replace it.
FWIW, Odyssey/Northstar recommend the Battery Minder (not Battery Tender) brand AGM specific trickle charger if you have a vehicle that sits a lot. I’ve found it to work well.

I also use a Victron Blue Smart charger with their high profile that charges at up to 14.7 volts occasionally if it’s been sitting for awhile without the trickle and the charge is down around 12.5 or so.

I really love this charger. I also use it for my house BattleBorn to keep the top balance synched with a custom profile, which is really easy to set up. The big bonus for this charger I had no idea about when I bought it, is that it also is a 12.8V power supply! They are in ~$80 range, work with the Victron app, and I think they are the best deal going. It has two amp settings for 4 and 15 amps, so you can actually use it as a trickle if you need to.

I cut off the battery clamps and put on an Anderson 50amp plug and made a variety of small dongles with different Anderson 50amp plugs to fit a few different applications in my system.

A few years ago I bought a NOCO Genius 5 smart charger, desulfator because it does all types of batteries and at the time I had the AGM in my Rover and a lead acid in my motorcycle.

I agree this is extremely disturbing. I use a Battle Born 100Ah as my second battery, and I have always worried about it sitting in my Phoenix garage during 110 plus degree summers. I have had it for three years and it has been fine in that heat, but this makes me a lot more concerned now. Yikes.
