I use a file followed by a 800 grit wet stone. I use 2000 grit on my knives, but 800 seems to be adequate for my axe.

Same here on hatchet for camping and axes, good file first then a good 800 grit stone. Wear good gloves and use a file handle! File into the blade edge, one stroke following the whole edge of the tool your are sharpening. After a couple of strokes switch to the other side. Same procedure with the stone. Don’t know why, but I like a round stone for ax and hatchet sharpening. Benz.

High quality 12” mill file followed up with a lansky two sided course/fine stone and honing oil.
I generally use my delta wet wheel grinder (Mostly used for sharpening wood turning chisels) followed by regular and fine diamond stones, polished with the buffing wheel.

Ditto the Lansky. If I'm touching a powered grinder it's because I did something stupid and need to rebuild the entire edge (or restoring an old tool bought on the cheap). I try to limit the stupid things.
