if anyone else is into this...pass on a pic of what you found!

We do a lot of trail riding in New Hampshire and their "ClassVI" roads are just that...unmaintained "old" roads and some called "highways". We see so many foundations from old homesteads in and among the trees along our routes. Many are built near streams/rivers. Imagine being able to see these homes and barns in "the day". Im with you on the history of these areas back when life was less confusing...great day dreaming spots :relieved:

There is also the Old Cascade Highway between Christina Lake and Rossland. It was the main access road into the west Kootenays prior to Hwy#3, and is still maintained as a forestry road. It's a great and beautiful drive too.

That's awesome, how do you find these roads? Would love to do that type of exploring but not sure there's much in the way of decommissioned roads here in NY.

i always use google earth and find information on certain parts of highways and towns. most are updated and older parts are left to rot as they make it easier for highways to have less curves. i'm looking forward to hunting route 66 through arizona this march and have used google to find most sections still able to be driven on.

great read!...shame its closed, would love to have driven this on the way home this march.
I have wanted to go check it out ever since i read the article. It is shame that it can't be used. Just to think that California might be two states if it wasn't built shows it's historical significance.

Awesome thread! There's an abandoned 13 mile section of the Pa Turnpike that I've always wanted to check out. It includes two separate tunnels. Since it was closed it's been used for TV shows like Life After People and movies like The Road.

Here's some pics from The Road and how it really looks today..

Another fun fact is that up until somewhat recently one of the tunnels was also a secret testing facility for race cars. Chip Ganassi Racing currently leases it.

Those "entrances" remind me of the jet launch tunnels at the base of Mt Gola in Bosnia. Germans tested jet launches down runways that started inside the mountain. Crazy engineering there. Was kind of trippy snooping around in the tunnels that were cleared of explosives when we were there in 98-99. Wish I had a camera on that adventure.

There used to be an organized bicycle ride on that section of the PA Turnpike, but I don't think that happens anymore.

So is the road closed? Or just not in use?
