I am in a similar situation with family size. Are the dogs in the cab? If so, how cramped does it feel? I am looking into purchasing a rig in the coming months and been trying to decide between a 150 or 250 equivalent.

Like the new tires and rims btw.

I have always kept the two dogs in the cab as until about 6 months ago it was just the wife and I. The biggest issue currently is a rear facing car seat takes up a ton of space...The wife doesn't like the idea of putting the dogs in kennels in the bed, she is a bit softer then I am having not grown up with hunting dogs like I have, lol. Between an f150 and a 250, the cab is identical, so not going to get any more room there.

I think once we can get to forward facing seats, or at least 1,we will be ok with the dogs in the cab again. Being in florida its really hard to have anything i the bed (stroller) during summer as its almost a guarantee it will get wet. I was looking at some SUV's as an extra, but unless you get to suburban size, I think this is always going to be an issue. Every SUV is going to have size limitations when you are needing things like strollers and dogs+kids all in the same space.

So as I am packing for our trip through the Georgia Traverse starting Saturday, I am definitely coming to realize i need more covered space. Aside from the theft perspective (and i really wish killing thieves was legal), i need more covered space. The forecast looks like garbage and its probably going to rain every day...I have lots of boxes/trunks, but this just isn't practical, especially from a home storage perspective. I am trying my best to not go the truck cap route as i just don't think I can get over the look. I would like a tonneau cover, but then that is going to limit me with racks and other accessories.

What I am curious about now is if a roll up tonneau cover would potentially work with some sort of bed rack. Has anyone done this? I feel like this would get me the best of both worlds, and i think I can still squeeze the dogs in the cab with 2 car seats.

I think the Lietner bed rack will eventually work with the retrax bed cover. You do lose about 6-8” of bed space due to the retractable cover folding into its container. As of now thats all i know. Lietner is still in the process of making that happen though.

Thats one of the biggest reasons (aside form the expense) that i don't like the retractable covers. You just look too much space and you really can't push things right up to the end of the bed to be strapped down.

I just came across this Putco rack that looks like it uses the stake hole pockets: Venture TEC Rack
No idea why more manufacturers don't do this, it just makes sense...Looks like you would be able to use any tonneau cover with this rack, although a folding one would likely hit the rack, so maybe this paired with a BAK rolling cover is in the future.

That Putco looks simplistic and nice. Its not cheap but then again a bed rack from a reputable company isnt either. I assume a soft topper isnt your thing? My bro in law has one and just fold it up or down when needed/not needed. There are alot of options for us now. Its just finding the right fit/style now

So i was looking at Putcos rack. I myself have a Tyger auto tonneau cover. Just got it for covering luggage. Will be getting rid of it once i decide what im going with bed rack wise. I could not use it with the putco if that was my only option. My cover sits on top of the bed sides. As most also do unless you get the type that slides

Agreed on the "on the bed rail" type covers. The ones i have always wanted and looked into are the ones that are are flush, so in the bed. All of the BAK products do this, so the roll up ones, the flip up ones, etc.

I've seen those as well, I just don't like the design. It seems easy enough to cause a failure, and i also believe that you still can't open the tonneau covers with those, but i could be wrong. Everything I've seen seemed to indicate that was the case.

Victory 4x4 makes a rack that works with softshell roll up covers. It does matter what type of roll up cover you get. The rack is for a Tundra, but is also listed under the universal section. They give some dimensions to determine if it would work with your truck or not. They also have some videos showing how to install and how a roll up cover works with it. I was pretty close to buying one for my 2013 f150 on last year's black Friday sales, but I didn't go through with it.

Cover the rack ,install RTT on top. Another alternative find local fabricator and make new rack that will work with tonneu cover.

I have hard backflip trifold tonneu cover on my f150, local shop makes rack for me that will work with my cover, use stack pockets for installation, i will post pictures once done

Just got back from the trip. Had a great time and the truck did well as expected. The weather was garbage, and it was hotter then i was hoping for, but the wife had a great time and our 6 month old was a champ. We definitely learned a lot and can't wait for tor the next trip.

1) Definitely need to pack more efficiently next time. A tonneau cover will likely aid me in being more space efficient vs using boxes that turned out to not be water tight anyways...
2) Better organization will go a long way...
3) Download any waypoints, music, points of interest, etc. before leaving....You are way more likely to not have internet where expected...(Did not have cell signal the entire trip...that includes in many "towns").
4) More recovery gear will make you more confident.
5) a proper camp shower/toilet will make the wife happier...
6) I defrinitely want rock slider.

The little one does AWESOME at camp, and even great in the truck while off pavement. Definitely thankful for that, especially at only 6 months old.

The wife got to do some driving as well, and now i think she had a bit more respect for me when I blast down the logging roads to our cabin. I think she believes I'm not specifically trying to jostle her around now :).

We had to jump a pretty good amount ahead (was running east to west) and by far the best section was the blue ridge gap area. The roads were very washed out, probably from all of the rain in the area recently. There was a ton of exposed buried wire as well...

I'm really happy i ended up buying some off brand traction boards. These definitely came in handy in not high siding the truck. A little stacking of rocks and the boards did the trick. This definitely goes back to wanting more recovery gear for the future. We were the only people on the road we saw the entire time, and we had zero cell signal the entire trip...Definitely want a winch for the truck. Not looking forward to the cost of an intercooler relocation kit in order to fit a hidden winch.

I'm basically debating between those and the rocky road outfitters sliders at this point. Sliders with an add a leaf or rear spacer block will give sooo much more clearance.

Yup. Mine are tucked pretty high up. And bolt on. Sdhq also makes some but weld on.

Awesome out man! Glad the family had a great time as well! Agree, definitely want a pair of sliders, i'll more than likely get with a local fab shop and have them make some. Also agree on the winch. I'd love one, but i'm not going to bite because i don't want to do the intercooler relocation + bumper + winch cost. Keep on keepin on!

How do you like the Bilstien level kit Offroad? Any rubbing at full tuck and turning?
I am still looking at the different brands and styles and levels of suspension. Don't want any more than 2" or 3".
Just a little side note. Looks like you still have the air dam mounted when off road. I believe it comes off pretty easy, like 6 screws. That will cut down on the scraping in the front.
