THE WRITEUP

(2014) I picked up my 4Runner from a mom who was going back to college in Kansas. The first time I laid eyes on the car, I KNEW I had to have it. It had 151,500 miles on the ODO, a V8, center differential locker, some wicked cool paint, and a clean (Toyota dealership stamped) service history. I was even able to take it to the dealership and talk all about what had been done to the car and actually speak with who did it all. Excellent experience all around. Top notch.

(this is the first photo I ever took of this 4Runner, the day I brought it home to where I was at college in Kansas)

(2015) I graduated McPherson College's Automotive Restoration program. I loaded my 4Runner up and headed to Oklahoma in order to restore classic Porsche and Mercedes.

First Mod: I painted my wheels black
Second Mod: Rancho RS9000XL Quicklift 2.5" - Simultaneously I built my first roof rack!

At the shop I used to fabricate at, I did a bit of race prep and had lots of DOM scraps laying around. Needless to say, I helped myself and fabricated a bumper in one evening when I was bored and decided not to play video games that night. (This bumper has since been replaced by a more baja-esque bumper as of this year 2019)

Third Mod: Front Bumper

oh, btw, I totally made light bar covers before they were a thing haha.

SO. Let's pick up where I left off here. I moved to Colorado in 2015 after transferring jobs from a Porsche shop to a Ferrari shop.

39299425934_d4f815ac77_o.jpg

I then built a roof rack out of DOM tubing.

40008564891_2e8d278d33_o.jpg

Then clearanced the fenders for the 33's.

40008564011_083ed5cddf_o.jpg

I also installed a snorkel, lights on the RR, and added limb risers.

40008564191_84d60ac9fb_o (1).jpg

At this point, I did a few things that I photographed, but lost!

1. 2" Delrin BL
2. Timing belt change
3. Left my Fiancee

A good fix for a broken heart was a set of 35" tires!!!

39299425104_1a42060e5c_o.jpg

After wheeling on the new tires, I totally shredded my fender plastics, so I ended up hi-lining the fenders.

I then went out and bought some lights for the front bumper.

After awhile, the I was tired of the wheels kicking stuff up on the hood and windscreen- my solution was to create a set of 4" wide fender flares.

33507180108_42aee8d26c_o.jpg32526962817_a3d59fb4dc_o.jpg

I then installed some hood vents that I fabricated. They are mainly for looks, but they do help vent heat a little when I use my air compressor and during the summer time here. I also added hood pins, my hood latch is super loose on the snatch, so I figured, why not.

At this point I had added an 84" EGO Bike Roof Rack, and purchased a 50" curved LED light bar. I couldnt find any mounts that I liked, so I fabbed up some out of aluminum, rivnuts, and screws.

33804438408_bc4bb60f1a_o.jpg33804435848_93f6157732_o.jpg47629011822_6f0359eeff_o.jpg47629010542_75327b39d5_o.jpg40715722993_53a0c2df12_o.jpg

After awhile, I ditched the light bar from my roof rack. I then moved cities and didn't get to work on the 4Runner very much.

Once I moved to my new house and bought a welder, I ditched my old bumper that I fabricated in 2015 for a new build.

48932931423_01846eb168_o.jpg
I ended up cutting and re welding the drivers side
48932931338_638da39d2a_o.jpg
My next item to fix was the sliders. I had a shop weld them on before I had a welder... big mistake.

I have more maintenance pics, and some subwoofer install and new seat install pics coming soon!

Very nice build mate. Welding is a great advantage building these rigs. Do you have any idea what the tab is on this build?

It’s very fulfilling being on the trail knowing that you were the one who put the vehicle together. Also helps when it breaks. :)

I also spent some time building/fabricating a vehicle. Wrote a blog about it in this thread. I included the total cost.
