    Handheld or Permanent HAM?

If you think you will stick with it, I’d go mobile. More power and capability. HTs are fine if you have repeaters around but the abilities of a 50w mobile rig and a good antenna will really help you out in the long run. Or go the route of “2 is 1 and 1 is none” and get both.

    Antenna rack mount

yeah it’s looking like I’ll go that route. Scrape some coating and make simple bracket that is tapped into the cross bar.

    Antenna rack mount

Anyone have a good antenna mount that would work with an older square style cross member on a Thule roof rack? I have a comet hood lip mount on my HAM setup and was wanting something low pro like the Midland ghost antenna for GMRS side stuff, and far away from the dual band antenna. Not...

If you had to pick just one to start…

If you are unfamiliar with radios in general and want to ease into it to learn, GMRS is perfect. Also consider if you have friends and family who won’t want to get licensed to use ham but are covered under your license or could be covered under their family‘s GMRS license if they get one...

    GMRS

A buddy has a MXT400 in his Jeep and really likes it. Seems like a solid unit. I only have a ham rig in my truck, but I’ve talked to him on a handheld and his radio sounds great.

Let's see some HAM setups in your rigs

Yeah I wanted simple for the house as the wife is a HAMbut not super proficient yet. Basic seemed to be better for her. I could later move it into her suv if she wanted.

GMRS: "not impressed" or "we musta been doing something wrong"

if you are looking for purely a handheld these look pretty sweet. External mag antenna and a pigtail to take the stress off the antenna jack and you could have a decent system. I started in GMRS and it got me into the HAM world. Daughter is still young so GMRS works for her well out in the...

I was going to buy one but had reservations about letting someone have my money for, then 4-6 months, and not having product in my hand. I emailed them w few months ago asking if they charged the card at time of sale or when it shipped and they confirmed it was at time of sale. I just can't...

    OB Hydro Flask

Same here! I fell in love with hydroflask last year and pretty much use one of their products daily now. Great products. If OB had a laser engraved bottle, I feel I would be forced to get one.

    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

Yeah the scorpion is cool but I've wanted a MPX since the first time I saw it. Shooting one, a full auto none the less, made me want one even more.

    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

Ordered a Sig MPX the other day after our rep brought in one and I shot it. Damn cool little gun. I've already got plans to SBR it and it'll probably end up as a gun for my adventures. Very neat little package and a hoot to shoot.

How to Start a Fire - Collected Wisdom

Last weekend we did a little spur of the moment campfire. My 4 year old got to try the ferro rod method out for the first time. She loved it, had to help her obviously but she thought she was the coolest thing ever getting a fire going. I like to have a few methods around and keep proficient...
