Got lost in Eastern Nevada and came upon this herd of wild horses.
And, by “lost” I mean got onto trails that showed on maps, but sometimes petered out, with a full tank of gas, 10 gallons of gas in Jerry cans, 11 gallons of water, and 5,000 calories of food onboard.
I carry a 25’ “logging chain” I bought at my farm supply store.
I don’t know the link size, but it’s a heavy thing and I don’t worry about damaging it.
This is a permit-required area and there are about 100 camp sites spread over 7, or so, campgrounds.
The intent is to prevent overcrowding - which would definitely happen!
The experience is definitely worth the hassle.
I’m in a Tacoma, and used to have a JKU.
I’ve learned that my travel/camp adventures are solo. I’ve learned I like simple food on the trail. I’ve learned I don’t enjoy rock crawling as much as I like 4x4 roads and trails. I’ve learned that sometimes my camp isn’t in the wild.
So, I’d go with...
I’ve put a Mylar sheet - the old ‘space blankets’ - under my sleeping pad or mattress.
With that, and a quilt over my down bag, I slept really comfortably under the stars at 18*F.
It helps a lot.
