I love these stories about how and what inspired us to spend as much time surrounded by nature. And no doubt those who do live a much calmer and fulfilled life. Mine definitely was nurtured by my parents and both would be smiling down on me knowing their efforts were not wasted.
Currently...
Wow...nice part of the country. Do you use Strava to help find your routes and whatnot? We use it over here and is quite helpful. Plus my wife is a total segment nut...always hunting QOM's.
Not much going on with this thread but I will try and revive ;-)
On a half year tour of western China. Currently in Fujian Province, heading up to Shanghai. White Flower Tea being grown everywhere and has been for a very long time. Beautiful quiet roads amongst some pretty spectacular scenery!
Tibetans are a very hardy bunch...creature comforts consist of a wind break and a good pile of yak dung to fuel their stoves. Some live in tents all year round tending their herds while others live in homes pass down from generations. An amazing culture in so many ways.
Pete's assessment was...
Definitely a belly-boat and fins. Weight has been an issue during our trips and vehicle modifications that don't allow removing the rear seats.
More than one way to skin a cat...maybe I have enough room now ;-)
I'm a little embarrassed to say how long I drove around with my security lug socket in the shop...and my bike rack key in the kitchen fibber drawer.
Maybe a year would pass before I could squeeze out a laugh...if I ever needed them.
I would reckon Google or Youtube searches will come up practically empty. Your Tibetan guide would be the one to ask. And now that your trip (through China) is done and dusted, I wouldn't be surprised he'd say you're the first westener he's heard of that has done a self driving tour from Nepal...
WOW!!!
How awesome was that...you guys are definitely on a very short list of western overlanders who have crossed Tibet.
Great pictures...many thanks for sharing. Some I recognize...and you both look pretty darn happy. Your town square pic in Shangri-la gets me itchin' to start sleeping under...
Hi Pete
Yes....well received and I am assuming you are referring to what you sent on page 1 of this thread. Although I would've loved to see some pics of your journey from Lhasa...across Tibet and into Yunnan Province ;-)
We're a week away from heading out towards Shanghai...then north as we...
You mentioned growing up there in your story. Certainly a great place to have grown up...formerly a North Van High alumni myself and Cloverly Elementry as well. Made the trek back last summer...did a little kayaking...a whole lot of mtn biking and posted a decent time up the Grouse Grind for an...
Fantastic...you made it. I definitely had my doubts but low and behold perseverance paid off. Well done!
I'd like to think that this opens the door for others to experience the amazing journey you have just taken...even though it's just one chapter in your epic adventure!
Hey Jas...great early morning read...thanks.
Always nice to revisit trips once taken and yours reminded myself of one taken many moons ago. I paddled up the Skeena River a ways...filled my belly with salmon for a few days. Then back to the saltchuck to continue paddling to Alaska.
Did finally...
Pete...looks like a fantastic itinerary and I can easily say Shangri-la / Lijiang is our favorite region for all things China. Heck...my avatar photo is taken in Lijiang and beauty totally surrounds!
We are currently in preparations to cast off next month for our annual half year tour which...
Pretty sweet looking rig!
One question...with all your gear plus extras (oversize tires, front bumper and winch, RTT, ect...) how are you in regards to your GVWR? Has it ever been a problem? I am hesitant to fill my tank because it puts me over the limit when we're fully decked out...my mech...
