Quite well. It’s solid for simplex at line of sight. No problem in a convoy. You’re not going to hit distant 2m repeaters, but I have other antennas for that.
I’ve connected with two that way. My wife served after I did. Email and the beginning of social media was around when she was discharged, so she was able to stay connected with many of her mates. She doesn’t understand why I’ve felt isolated from the camaraderie.
I've had that kind of arrangement in the past. If you think about it, you transmit very little compared to listening time. My current rig has three roof mounted antennas, but I'd consider a cowl mount again if I had a roof rack.

Your antennas are too close together. Transmit on one radio is overloading the receiver front end on the other. Ideally they need to be as fas apart as possible. That's hard in a mobile condition. Try separating the antennas by 3 feet, and see what happens.
