Welcome Wayne and Michele! It'll be a grand trip. Thanks for signing-up. Have fun prepping your vehicle and getting your gear - sound like you've got a great vehicle to start-out with. There's tons of information on the OB pages, and you can always just ask us if you have any questions. Are...

    Let them eat SPAM!

You can order SPAM online from the SPAM shop. I didn't know they had so many varieties. Link: Varieties - All Products (spam.com) Some of these flavors they're out of stock, but I might have to order some of the ones that sound interesting that they do have on hand. Gotta have something for...

US East Running the Trans America Trail (TAT) from WV to the OR coast

I received my TAT stickers in the mail today! I'll wait till June to put them on. I'll put one on the windshield (probably lower driver's side corner) and maybe on one (or both) rear side window(s), and probably one on the trailer somewhere. It would be nice if we all had a TAT sticker on our...

    Let them eat SPAM!

Looks like grubworm has started something... the 2021 SPAM challenge! It is on! In June I will be driving from WA to WV to start the TAT, and will be taking the TAT all the way back to the Oregon Coast. I'll be gone about 5-6 weeks. I think that'll be about 20 states(?) out and back. I'll...

US East Running the Trans America Trail (TAT) from WV to the OR coast

You may be able to take a ferry from Bellingham, WA up to Alaska. I know the ferry stops in Haines (been there), but if you get off in Haines, you still have to drive through Canada to get back into Alaska. The Ferry may continue on to another port in Alaska that lets you stay there in Alaska...

    Let them eat SPAM!

I'll be doing a good bit of traveling this year. I might have to take on that challenge.

I got the TAT maps from Sam sometime during the night, so this afternoon I got them loaded into my GAIA account. It took a little bit of time to get all 16 maps loaded (I got the TAT bundle, so there's states we won't be driving through on this trip that I still downloaded for a later date)...

I'm excited - lots of interest in this trip! Great conversations so far - don't lose-it and let something take over your summer to where you have to put off doing the TAT for another year. Book it now - tell yourself you're going. Let's do this! I should be getting my COVID-19 vaccine at...

US East Running the Trans America Trail (TAT) from WV to the OR coast

Excellent! You'll be glad to have the handheld when out of your vehicle. The small 4Watt BaoFeng UV-5R radios or the 5Watt hand-held GMRS radios (like from Midland) would be adequate for this trip (purchase a spare battery so you always have a fully charged spare) if that's all you can afford...

I'm glad we've got some smart radio folks chiming in here! My HAM/GMRS knowledge only goes so far (not far at all actually). Thanks! I'm learning stuff. Thanks for the antenna advice. I have my HAM call sign memorized (KI7TSP), but not my GMRS. I carry copies of both licenses in my Jeep...

US East Running the Trans America Trail (TAT) from WV to the OR coast

It is news to me. If anyone hears anything or knows anything about this, let us know. And yeah; $35 will buy you a BaoFeng UV-5R and a spare battery!

Definitely looks like another decent external antenna option for the little BaoFeng radios. Thanks! It isn't that much more expensive - it is actually quite reasonable. I mentioned I used a Rugged Radio dash-mount for my lil' BaoFeng radio (that's not going anywhere). This mount requires the...

US East Running the Trans America Trail (TAT) from WV to the OR coast

Here's a magnetic antenna that looks like it would work for GMRS use with a BaoFeng UV-5R (MHz numbers are approximate and rounded to whole numbers). I think I remember reading from someone knowledgeable about HAM radios that they'd rather have a cheap radio and a good antenna vs. having a...

Thanks for the compliment! I'm just trying to help folks (based on my experience) who may not know where to start. There's so much stuff out there to weed though to get to what you really need or what will get the job done vs. all the "glam and glitz" stuff out there as you mentioned.

It is a 5Watt radio. About the same power as the BaoFeng UV-5R. I'll do. Can you buy an additional battery so you've got a spare? Link to spare batteries: AVP17 Rechargeable Batteries | Midland Radio (midlandusa.com)
