That's really not the case on JL/JTs, especially since the diesel will be auto-only. The 8 speed auto has a very deep first few gears, the total spread runs: 4.71 1st, 3.13 2nd, 2.10 3rd, 1.67 4th, 1.28 5th, 1:1 6th, 0.84 7th and 0.67 8th. The stick DOES have a deeper 1st (5.13) but from 2nd...
That Chief is way too cool! I don't know if I count as odd-ball with a WJ. It's certainly not as common as a JKUR, but it's not all that uncommon either.

Wow, tip 'o the hat, I would have called a buddy (or two) and ordered a pizza to bribe them to help me out. That's some ingenuity right there. Also, I really like that PanaVice, thanks for helping me find that. What radio is that exactly in the pic above? How do you like it?

Wow... AWESOME thread for us WJ folks. I just gave it a skim from the very first post through the end; lots of good info and I appreciate the opportunity to learn from your experiences. Three things right off the bat that you've done which I'm interested in and might repeat are:
180 T-Stat...
Yup, I hear you. I've had my '11 diesel Chevy 2500 for just under 9 years now, and love it. A diesel like the R2.8 would be an AWESOME choice for your rig. I'm sure you've seen Fred's R2.8 TJ "tubesock", right?
That said, you'd be surprised of the low-end grunt of a 6.2L LS3... and the...
I agree, it's a total bummer that there's no CARB EO# for the R2.8. The funny thing, is the lack of a CARB EO# on the R2.8 will lead somebody like yourself to consider big gassers instead. You can get a LOT of motor for similar $ of a R2.8, motors with CARB EO#s that allow them to be swapped...
Looks good! Keep us posted on how it holds up. It's a little bigger than what I'm after, but I'm definitely interested in all of the "budget" options out there...

Fair point. I have some outfitter's cots that we use on the sleeping porches out at the family cabin way deep in the Payette National Forrest in Idaho. The're super comfy (especially with that ExPed I posted a link to on one) and get you off the ground, so you have to worry far-less about...
I think my answer would be different every day of the week you ask me, and depending on where I as intending to go. It's fun to dream and kick around different ideas though.
On the "semi-realistic" side of things, I think it'd be either a JL Unlimited or JT (Gladiator), starting life as a...
Chris, what's the reasoning behind the hard-stop at 2008? It seems sort of arbitrary.
Fair warning: I'm super-biased and I'm really hooked on WJ ('99-04) Jeep Grand Cherokees, and they hit a lot of the marks you mentioned. For daily driving they are extremely pleasant especially if you get...
Great info/opinion there!
I agree on all-fronts. Ground tents these days have come a long way from my backpacking days, and really the longest part of the process is probably staking out the corners of the main tent and guylines for the rainfly. Your points about the key advantages are...
