I owned a first gen Explorer (well still do now that I think about it) for three teens it’s too small... it has just as much kido room as my second gen Ram, and less interior room than my 4th gen Bronco... and now that the kids (all but 1) have left the nest, I finally found a third row seating...

Well, I wanted Ham for the POWER, so getting a 5-8 watt HT kind of defeats the purpose of ham for me... and then still having to buy adapters and such for the antenna and chargers, etc... I resides to go with a mobile unit. I want to play around with ARPS, SkyWarn, and some other stuff as well...
Also I might add, I see several Ham equipment listings on Craigslist in your neck of the woods... some of them are tempting me to drive all the way there.
