Does Overlanding Require You to Go Off Pavement?

I'm in software, it's an unintended feature, not a bug! -TJ

Does Overlanding Require You to Go Off Pavement?

A-effin-men! I wish I would have seen you out on the trail with the minivan when I was in one of my solid axle, locked rigs... the only laughing would have been me laughing at myself for being in such an over-prepared rig as you cruised through with the van! -TJ

    Vehicle Opinions

Exactly, a corporation or municipality would have to have a VERY specific use-case to have a Jeep (as in Wrangler) as a fleet vehicle. That said, the Placer County Sherriff's Department has a pretty built Rubicon for patrolling/rescue on... The Rubicon. -TJ

    Vehicle Opinions

A 2006 Jeep Rubicon started at $27,620 in '05 (when they first went on sale) money. Adjusted for Bidenflation, that's $42,309.65. A 2023 Rubicon 2-door starts at $43,295 - we're talking $1k difference and you get a LOT more features/comfort in a JLR vs. a TJR. I'm not sure what the relevance...

    Vehicle Opinions

I have a hard time agreeing that Jeep lost its way back then. You can still get a 2 door JL, which is a pretty small vehicle by the metric of something that has to meet current crash test regulations. You can also get a JLUR Xtreme Recon with factory 35"s (on "beadlock capable" wheels that are...

Does Overlanding Require You to Go Off Pavement?

I get your sentiment, but if you saw me out w/ my SAS'ed D'max, Four Wheel Camper, and semi-elaborate camp setup you'd prob assume I was an "elite" and I look down on people. The next weekend you might catch me camping *in* (or next to) my basically bone stock Xterra. I think prejudging anyone...

Does Overlanding Require You to Go Off Pavement?

And if dirt is a requirement I still see tons of homeless that are Overlanding all around me. The real answer is: "who cares?" If you're getting out and enjoying yourself does it matter what other people call it? Any bar you put out there for something to be "true Overlanding" will have...

    Undecided Rig

The OHC Ford 4.0s are super problematic, and known for timing chain issues which means pulling the t-case/trans because they run a jack-shaft through the engine to run a timing chain setup on the BACK of the engine for one of the banks. But you're right the OHV versions aren't bad, and it...

    Undecided Rig

Quadra-Drive or Quadra-Trac II? Both run the 247 t-case, but only the QD has the Vari-Loks in the axles. -TJ

    Undecided Rig

The Grands you are considering would be ZJ ('93-98) and WJ ('99-04). Both are great options being solid front/rear axle with good 4x4 systems available. My personal preference would be a '02-04 Overland or Limited with the 4.7HO (standard on the Overland, optional on the Limited). IMHO the...

    Build getting started!

Love seeing another WJ build! Have you looked into HK Offroad's offerings for WJs: Grand Cherokee WJ 1999 - 2004 I run his hidden winch mount and core support. Bash is a super good dude and his customer support is excellent. -TJ

What is YOUR ultimate overland setup, and why?

My buddy has a GMT400 Suburban with a SAS... he has 4 kids so the space is needed! It's on 37"s and locked and goes everywhere. -TJ

What is YOUR ultimate overland setup, and why?

If I was looking to SAS a Xterra I'd definitely be looking at something like D44s or Ford 9" instead of one ton axles. Unless you go reDONKulous it'll never have the tire or power to require the one tons, and the lighter axles will provide more ground clearance, less unsprung weight (better...
