Best Rig to Start a Build

You have a lot of expereince off roading ? Are you sure you need bigger tires ? They look very cool, but almost any pick up is very capable with a rear dif lock option and with some better tires that the stock one can probably go on more than 90 % of the trails, you just fit an engine...

    Hilux 2020 soft overland build

Thank you. Tacoma is very nice as well. There are some US imports arround, not that many tough. I wish we had a petrol option for Hilux as well, we don't even get the 2.8 diesel that is available in Austraila along with the 4.0 v6.. The main difference between the mid size trucks in US...

    Where to start?

I would like to add one thing.. before buying anything expensive go to a dealer, or an expo, maybe a mate who has it and test it. If it is an RTT, take the whole family and climb in the bloody thing, pull the zippers, check the mattres.. etc. Don't get stuff becouse of the reviews or other...

Garmin Overlander and OSM maps // gpx, gbp, kmz, kml // Basecamp

My understanting is that you can load any topo map via the base camp. Also it is based on android so in case the default maps suck, you can use any other android map app, but you need to install that as an apk. file I was also looking at a Garmin Ovelander, but maps for Europe/Asia...

Horror Stories and getting in over your head on the Trail.

Had a bit of Adventure in Albania last summer. Back then I had Landcruiser prado 120 ( lexus gx470 in US i think ) . I was with the family ( wife and kid ) . We started doing this 40 km trail in the mountains we found on Wikiloc ( this is a popular app in Europe for sharing all kinds of...

Garmin Overlander and OSM maps // gpx, gbp, kmz, kml // Basecamp

For Central Asia/ Russia, my advice is to work with maps.me, you can load in it gpx files and to my surprise it has many many tracks already in it, once I loaded the gpx files they became very often routable with turn by turn instructions. Maps me is an android/IOS app that works with...

    Frontrunner Accessories any good?

Mostly they are ok. Some things overpriced or useless. The roof rack is very good, but you will depend on them for accesories and they are pricey . bash plate is the same as others, steel 3mm with powder coating, What I liked about mine was the fact it need it only 4 bolts..

Do you do all your own build labor?

What ever you decide, I would advise you to try to do the electrical work or at least learn as much as possible about it . It is the one thing who can stop you dead in the water.. You can limp back home or at least to a shop with most mechanical issues. .. with electrical issues you are dead...

    Hilux 2020 soft overland build

Found a good earth :) Redarc connected I have light in the canopy :) The only connection left to do is for the solar, but that one is easy, all of it is crimped already, just to put in place. After that I plan to use some velcro cable ties to give the semblance of neat, than hide...

    Hilux 2020 soft overland build

Thank you. I started with the preparation for the wiring of the auxiliary battery. red zip ties so I know what to cut if need it. Many say you can get it the back of the bed via the Stop lights.. bullshit.. you still need to drill 1 h later the wire is in :) Redarc installed, not wired...

    Family Overlanding Advice

For a first successful experience.. weather is important, and don't forget home essentials. Make a fire and proper old school cooking on the fire.. that is always fun and involves all the family.

    Hilux 2020 soft overland build

Received delivery of the Hilux yesterday afternoon. Today I went to the shop to install the canopy and roof bars. The fridge slide is in The canopy is made of aluminum, and the attention to detail, finish and insulation is amazing. Tomorrow, when I will have better natural light...

    How Minimalist Can You Get?

True,. I know what you mean. I used to climb mountains by foot, now I got 4x4 to take me there :)

    How Minimalist Can You Get?

it is a mental thing. When you come back from a trip take a look at all the gear you had and lay it all out. If you had not used it for the last 3 trips and it is not a recovery or survival item .. leave it home or find a replacement that does other things.. Pots .. same principal...

    Hilux 2020 soft overland build

I don't see many Hilux here though they are pretty popular outside US, so I was thinking it might be interesting present one. It replaces a 2009 Landcruiser prado 120 ( Lexus GX 470 ) , who had many many miles and started to have a lot of issues, and I prefer to spend my time traveling...

    AGM battery life?

any graph from the manufacturer tells the complete story. YOu discharge them less at 50 % or less, the cycles they will endure drop from 2500 cycles to 500.. so 5 TIMES less.. same with temperature. at 20 degrees they last 7-8 years, at 40 degrees celsius ( 104 F) the life goes down...

    Getting started

Have a shovel, a piece of wood to use a stand for the jack, maybe some maxtrax or other recovery boards, you will be fine. With those you can get out of anything except a river. Might be more work than having a winch or other fancy things, but they will do the job. Like others here, I will...

My Subaru Build: A Series of Compromises

you chose well with the roof bars. I don't understand the combination roof rack + rtt. If you put an RTT there is no room left for anything else so it is just added weight and cost.. Have nice trips !

My Subaru Build: A Series of Compromises

Had a forester that I loved. The only week points that the cross trek and the forester have are the weight capacity. If you keep it light, stay under GVM, it will not fail you.
