I don’t think there is room in the mini’s case for a fan. But you weren’t the first one to mention this problem with the QCX + or Mini... a guy that I watched build one used thermal paste and a heat sink for a Raspberry Pi to help with the heat.
Nope, your iPad with cell data had a gps built in... just download the map tiles from Gaia that you will need for your route... reads this whole thread, it explains how to do everything you need to do.

Depends on where you are going specifically. The higher elevations can have snow well into July for Idaho. Higher elevations are those above 4,000 feet. I highly recommend the “Craters of the Moon” NP around Idaho Falls.
