I always use NMO style antenna mounts on my rigs, that way I can swap out different antennas or radios on the same mount and coax. Have several of the Comet CP-5NMO hood edge mounts (check to makes sure it works with your hood edge profile) and love that they are adjustable in all directions...
Carter, we are right in the middle of the same thing on our new to us JKU, for the TJ, Smittybilt, Rugged Ridge, Rampage, and Barricade (Extreme Terrain) have some budget minded ones. Poison Spyder, DV8 & Warn make ones a step up that are a bit more.
For me I want one that does not...
Steven, Welcome to Overland Bound from Camano Island (up and a bit to the left of Redmond), should not have too much trouble finding help getting your new 'Toy' properly dirty... Hope to cross paths, trails, or mud holes with you someday.
For me I weigh 4 major categories when selecting a new or new to me vehicle. First I set a realistic budget I am able or willing to spend (factoring in the cost of any repairs to a used vehicle and planned upgrades. then in no particular order 1. Mechanical (reliability and ease of repair &...
Another in a series of semi regular meetups for NW Washington overlanders. (and others that don't mind a longer drive...) We are opening our home for lunch and a get together to plan some overlanding trips, go over gear that should be carried and generally shake off the cobwebs getting ready...
James, welcome to Overland Bound from Camano Island to your north. If you are a Facebook user, there is a Overland Bound - Northwest Facebook group you can join. More importantly - Thank you for your service to the country!
I have the Uniden BC536HP hard mounted in my Ram Truck, its connected to a GPS puck on the dash, so I just set the desired radius (up to 50 miles) that I want to listen to, and the select what types of radio traffic (Police, fire, DOT, military etc) and the radio constantly programs itself...
I agree less tech in your rig may be a benefit when travelling outside other countries, both to avoid garnering attention from both authorities and people looking for a quick smash and grab. My preference is HAM radio due to the number of available repeaters and hobbyists that monitor the bands...
Excerpt from FCC rules for GMRS below, it seems about the same rules as for HAM except that since your GMRS license is good for the entire family, you can add a station number to the end of the call sign to identify different radios (stations) if your family is using more than one at a time, as...
I do like that It does pick up a third bolt location which should take some of the shear load off of the other two bolts due to the offset pull point. Hopefully attachment bolts are a high grade and not from a box store.
We had planned to put the Dometic D30 drawer fridge in our Grand Cherokee, but after many shipping delays, the supplier upgraded for no charge us to the Engel version which has the same overall dimensions but a different compressor and was a couple of hundred more if I remember correctly. We...
I got Michelle a new to us JKU for Christmas, and we decided to take it on a 900 mile drive to Yellowstone for a first drive. Managed to find better weather there than what we left behind in Washington, although a bit colder. Had pretty good luck with the critters in the park being willing to be...
I know my XK Commander does the key activated DTC code display also, very handy, keep a list of codes and what they mean in the glove box of the rigs in case i need to diagnose and order parts from the highway or trail. I did replace crank & cam sensors, throttle position and idle air on...
