    REI and Overlanding?

I have a feeling Overlanding wasn't included in the survey because they cater to activities where you are physically active. That said, they sell gear like rooftop tents so I think they support it as a means to getting yourself to those activities, which fits where Overlanding (what I used to...

    Overland GPS on a budget

GPS and mapping/direction software are two different things. GPS just gets your location and elevation based off of positioning satellites in orbit. It doesn't know anything about your surroundings. To make GPS useful, it needs to be paired with software (an app). Some software uses offline data...

National parks that have good off road trails?

Capitol Reef NP has a few trails within the park and is surrounded by National Forest and BLM land. Most of it I saw was maintained gravel but there's some interesting sections. Grand Teton doesn't have much in the park but the surrounding National Forests have gravel trails as well...

Who's doing a Mojave Rd trip?

There's a few pages dedicated to it in the Guide to California Backroads. I just picked up a copy two weeks ago from Amazon

    Chicagoland/Illinois

Wish I'd found you guys sooner, I'm between Dubuque and Quad Cities but camp/fish all over the area. Unfortunately I'm relocating to San Diego in a few weeks. If you're ever looking for an extra truck or even a navigator/camera guy for trips out West let me know.

The one thing you have to cook on every trip?

Sirracha chicken tacos. Nothing Mexican about them but we love them and eat them but on nearly every trip, sometimes for a few meals. The best trick we found is to cook the rice at home and then keep it on ice till you need it. Much easier to reheat than try to simmer perfectly on a camp stove.

    Wanted fj80 drawars +cheap+

Would you consider building your own? I did last year and it's essentially just a box with a few nesting boxes inside. The hardest (and most expensive) part really was sourcing the locking slides. I built mine for my 05 4Runner, but the design could work on any vehicle. I think in total it was...

    Axe Sharpening

Ditto the Lansky. If I'm touching a powered grinder it's because I did something stupid and need to rebuild the entire edge (or restoring an old tool bought on the cheap). I try to limit the stupid things.

Kids or no Kids? (Camping that is)

Exactly. We spent three weeks traveling through SD, WY, ID, MT, UT, and CO last year during the big eclipse and my boy learned more than he would have in those weeks of school (his teacher even said that). Yet people were shocked we were taking him out of school. It was a once in a lifetime...

    Trouble (people/animals) on the Trail

If I'm in Grizzly country I carry bear spray but other than that I'm not too worried. I've not seen a Griz yet, but I've had some Bull Moose come through camp and depending on their mood they can be almost as dangerous. Just have to be smart and calm and give them their distance, even if it's...

Kids or no Kids? (Camping that is)

I grew up camping with my family, it was the only way we got a vacation since it was cheap. Once I was grown I never really considered a "real" vacation and much prefer to be in the woods. When our son was born I probably waited a bit too long, but we've been camping with him since he was four...
